וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים ׀ לִשְׁלֹמֹה יַעַן אֲשֶׁר הָיְתָה זֹאת עִם־לְבָבֶךָ וְלֹֽא־שָׁאַלְתָּ עֹשֶׁר נְכָסִים וְכָבוֹד וְאֵת נֶפֶשׁ שֹׂנְאֶיךָ וְגַם־יָמִים רַבִּים לֹא שָׁאָלְתָּ וַתִּֽשְׁאַל־לְךָ חׇכְמָה וּמַדָּע אֲשֶׁר תִּשְׁפּוֹט אֶת־עַמִּי אֲשֶׁר הִמְלַכְתִּיךָ עָלָֽיו׃
And God said to Shelomo, because this was in thy heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thy enemies, nor even hast thou asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayst judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:

ואת נפש שונאיך. לנצחם:
the life of your enemies to defeat them.
הַחׇכְמָה וְהַמַּדָּע נָתוּן לָךְ וְעֹשֶׁר וּנְכָסִים וְכָבוֹד אֶתֶּן־לָךְ אֲשֶׁר ׀ לֹא־הָיָה כֵן לַמְּלָכִים אֲשֶׁר לְפָנֶיךָ וְאַחֲרֶיךָ לֹא יִֽהְיֶה־כֵּֽן׃

החכמה והמדע נתון לך. מה ששאלת:
Wisdom and knowledge are granted you that which you requested.
עושר ונכסים וכבוד. אשר לא שאלת אתן לך:
and riches, possessions, and honor which you did not request, I shall grant you.
אשר לא היה כן למלכים אשר לפניך ואחריך לא יהיה. מוסב על עושר וכבוד אשר לא שאלת כי החכמה שאני נותן לך בה תלוי גם עושר גם כבוד גם אריכות ימים דכתיב (משלי ג׳:ט״ז) אורך ימים בימינה ובשמאלה עושר וכבוד וזהו שכתוב במלכים (א' י"א) ויגדל המלך שלמה מכל מלכי הארץ לעושר ולחכמה וגומר:
such as that the kings before you did not possess and which will not be so after you This refers back to “riches and honor” which you did not request, because the wisdom that I am granting you: riches, honor, and longevity, are dependent on it, as it is written (Prov. 3:16): “Length of days in its right hand; and in its left hand, riches and honor.” This is what is written (I Kings 10:23): Now King Solomon transcended all the kings of the earth in affluence and wisdom, etc.”
וַיָּבֹא שְׁלֹמֹה לַבָּמָה אֲשֶׁר־בְּגִבְעוֹן יְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִם מִלִּפְנֵי אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד וַיִּמְלֹךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {פ}

יען אשר היתה זאת עם לבבך. שאין אדם שואל דבר זה אלא מי שיש יראת שמים בלבו כענין שנאמר ואתה תחזה מכל העם אנשי חיל יראי אלהים (שמות י״ח:כ״א):
Since this was in your heart For a person does not request this thing unless he has the fear of Heaven in his heart, as it is stated (Ex. 18:21): “But you must seek out from the people men of ability, God-fearing men.”
