וַיהֹוָה אָמַר אֶל־אֲחִיָּהוּ הִנֵּה אֵשֶׁת יָרׇבְעָם בָּאָה לִדְרֹשׁ דָּבָר מֵעִמְּךָ אֶל־בְּנָהּ כִּֽי־חֹלֶה הוּא כָּזֹה וְכָזֶה תְּדַבֵּר אֵלֶיהָ וִיהִי כְבֹאָהּ וְהִיא מִתְנַכֵּרָֽה׃
Adonoy had [already] spoken to Achiyoh, “Behold the wife of Yerovom is comeing to ask of you about her son, for he is sick. Say this and this to her; and when she arrives, she will be in disguise.”

Therefore I will bring evil to the house of Yerovom, and I will cut off from Yerovom [every] male child; any that are restrained and any that are abandoned in Yisroel. I will completely remove the house of Yerovom [from existence] as one removes dung until is completely gone.

משתין בקיר. תרגם יונתן: ידע מדע, משית בקירות לבו:
Male child. [Targum] Yonoson rendered, “one who knows knowledge,” [i.e.,] he who places it into the walls of his heart.2See I Shmuel 25:22.3Alternatively, משתין בקיר refers to a dog who urinates on walls, i.e., the prophet is prophesying that the destruction will be so severe, that so much as a dog will not be left when the house of Yerovom is destroyed.—Radak
עצור ועזוב. עצור שיש לו מחזיק יד, כמו (שמואל א ט יז): זה יעצור בעמי, ועזוב, שאין לו מחזיק ביד:
Any that are restrained and that are abandoned. עצור is one who has someone restraining him, as in, “This one will rule over My people.”4I Shmuel 9:17. And עזוב is one who has no one restraining him.
כאשר יבער. המבער את המאכל בפיו, לעשות גלל, כך אבער אחריו עד תומו:
As one removes. As the one who digests food which [eventually] becomes dung,5Alternatively, גלל means “tooth,” which consumes food completely.—Radak so will I expunge after him until he is totally consumed.6Alternatively, “I will completely remove the house of Yerovom, as one who sweeps out dung until it is thoroughly cleaned out.—Metzudas Dovid
הַמֵּת לְיָרׇבְעָם בָּעִיר יֹאכְלוּ הַכְּלָבִים וְהַמֵּת בַּשָּׂדֶה יֹאכְלוּ עוֹף הַשָּׁמָיִם כִּי יְהֹוָה דִּבֵּֽר׃

דבר טוב. שבטל משמרתו, שהושיבו אביו שומר שלא יעלה איש לרגל, ובטל משמרתו ועלה:
Something good. He abandoned his watch; for his father had stationed him as a sentry so that no person would go up [to Yerusholayim] on the pilgrimage festival. He abandoned his watch and went up.7See Maseches Mo’ed Katan 28b.
