Dovid sent the people forth, a third under the hand of Yoav, a third under the hand of Avishai, the son of Tsruyoh, Yoav's brother and a third by the hand of Itai, the Gitite. The king said to the people, "I will also go out with you."

וַיֹּאמֶר הָעָם לֹא תֵצֵא כִּי אִם־נֹס נָנוּס לֹֽא־יָשִׂימוּ אֵלֵינוּ לֵב וְאִם־יָמֻתוּ חֶצְיֵנוּ לֹא־יָשִׂימוּ אֵלֵינוּ לֵב כִּֽי־עַתָּה כָמֹנוּ עֲשָׂרָה אֲלָפִים וְעַתָּה טוֹב כִּֽי־תִֽהְיֶה־לָּנוּ מֵעִיר (לעזיר) [לַעְזֽוֹר]׃ {ס}
The people said [in reply], "Do not go out [with us] because if we flee they will not pay us any attention and if they kill half of us they will not pay us any attention because now [you are worth] ten thousand of us. And now, it will be better if you help us from the city."

Because now. While you are in your glory [uncaptured] you are as important as all of us [together].
Ten thousand. Like us ten thousand men.
If you help us from the city. [Yonoson translates:] "It will be better if you pray for us from the city for help.
They will not pay us any attention. It will not be important in their eyes to overpower and to boast [[victoriously] now that you are not in the war.
