and he took it, and its king, and all its cities; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were in it; he left none remaining: as he had done to Ḥevron, so he did to Devir, and to its king; as he had done also to Livna, and to her king.

So Yehoshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the Negev, and of the plain, and of the slopes, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Yisra᾽el had commanded.

מקדש ברנע ועד עזה. מצד דרומית של ארץ ישראל הוא מן המזרח למערב, ולא הספיק לכבוש כל המצר ונשאר מעזה עד הים, הוא שאמר למטה ואת הארץ הנשארת העזתי והאשדודי וגו':
From Kadush-barnea to Gaza. This refers to the south side of Eretz Yisroel going from east to west, but he did not conquer the entire boundary, leaving unconquered the area from Gaza to the [Mediterranean] Sea. This is what is stated below, “This is the land that remained [unconquered], the Gazites and the Ashdodites”16Chapter 13:2,3
וְאֵת כׇּל־הַמְּלָכִים הָאֵלֶּה וְאֶת־אַרְצָם לָכַד יְהוֹשֻׁעַ פַּעַם אֶחָת כִּי יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל נִלְחָם לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
