MISHNAH: One who contracts with another for a field for a few years may not sow flax60Which exhausts the soil which then takes a number of years to recover. and does not have sycamore logs61Sycamores are planted for their wood, not their fruit. If cut down, the stump (סַדַּן הַשִּׁקְמָה “anvil of the sycamore”) grows a new tree which will need at least seven years to grow to usable size. Cf. Kilaim 1:8 Note 150; Ševi‘it 4:5 Note 71.. If he contracted for seven years62For a minimum of 7 years., he may sow flax and does have sycamore logs.

HALAKHAH: “One who contracts with another for a field,” etc. One understands that for wheat he may not sow flax. For flax may he not sow wheat? Flax damages the soil for three years and you say so63That one may not substitute wheat for flax.? Rebbi Menaḥem, the brother of Rebbi Gorion, explained before Rebbi La: It is better to sow flax after flax but not barley after barley64E reads: “wheat after wheat”. It seems that this reading is required by the preceding Halakhah, Note 58. The Tosephta, 9:32, allows any sequence of crops on condition that no crop be planted for two consecutive years..
