MISHNAH: If somebody provides for his wife through a third party, he cannot give her less that two qab228One sixth of a seah, about 2.17 liters. One speaks here of grain, delivered per week. of wheat or four qab of barley. Rebbi Yose said, only Rebbi Ismael assigned her barley, becaused he lived in proximity of Idumea229The Babli, 64b, reads this sentence as meaning that only R. Ismael requires that the quantity of barley be double that of wheat. There is no reason to assume this interpretation for the Yerushalmi; it seems that R. Yose forbids a husband to give his wife barley except in regions in which wheat is not cultivated..

HALAKHAH: “If somebody provides for his wife through a third party,” etc. What is “in proximity of Idumea”? In the South230It is known that R. Ismael, the student of R. Joshua, lived in the South but it is not known what the definition of “South” is, whether in the mountains South of Hebron or in the Southern plain near Ascalon. He probably did not live in Kefar Aziz, cf. Kilaim, Chapter 6, Note 42. Idumea in Second Temple times was the Negev..
