וּפְלִשְׁתִּים נִלְחֲמוּ בְיִשְׂרָאֵל וַיָּנׇס אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵל מִפְּנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים וַיִּפְּלוּ חֲלָלִים בְּהַר גִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃
Now the Pelishtim fought against Yisra᾽el; and the men of Yisra᾽el fled from before the Pelishtim and fell down slain on mount Gilboa.

וַיַּדְבְּקוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים אַחֲרֵי שָׁאוּל וְאַחֲרֵי בָנָיו וַיַּכּוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים אֶת־יוֹנָתָן וְאֶת־אֲבִינָדָב וְאֶת־מַלְכִּישׁוּעַ בְּנֵי שָׁאֽוּל׃
And the Pelishtim followed hard after Sha᾽ul, and after his sons; and the Pelishtim slew Yonatan, and Avinadav, and Malki-shua, the sons of Sha᾽ul.

וַתִּכְבַּד הַמִּלְחָמָה עַל־שָׁאוּל וַיִּמְצָאֻהוּ הַמּוֹרִים בַּקָּשֶׁת וַיָּחֶל מִן־הַיּוֹרִֽים׃

וימצאוהו המורים בקשת. בוא וראה כי אין חכמה ואין תבונה לנגד ה' (משלי כ״א:ל׳) כי נגד ה' דרכי איש בנימין היו שונאיהם נופלים לפניהם בקשת כי הם בקיאים בקשת כדכתיב אטר יד ימינו וגו' בשופטים (כ"א) וכן ביהונתן צדה אורה לשלח לי למטרה בשמואל (א' כ') וכתיב למטה (י"ב ב') בנימן נושקי קשת מימיני' וגו' וכן באסא בספר זה (ב' י"ד) ומבנימן נושאי מגן ודורכי קשת וגו' אבל כשהשם סר מעל שאול נפל ביד רובה קשת בדבר שהוא אומנתו ויחל מן היורים. כמו ותתחלחל המלכה (אסתר י'):
וַיֹּאמֶר שָׁאוּל אֶל־נֹשֵׂא כֵלָיו שְׁלֹף חַרְבְּךָ ׀ וְדׇקְרֵנִי בָהּ פֶּן־יָבֹאוּ הָעֲרֵלִים הָאֵלֶּה וְהִתְעַלְּלוּ־בִי וְלֹא אָבָה נֹשֵׂא כֵלָיו כִּי יָרֵא מְאֹד {ס} וַיִּקַּח שָׁאוּל אֶת־הַחֶרֶב וַיִּפֹּל עָלֶֽיהָ׃
