וַיִּקָּבְצוּ כׇֽל־יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־דָּוִיד חֶבְרוֹנָה לֵאמֹר הִנֵּה עַצְמְךָ וּֽבְשָׂרְךָ אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃
Then all Yisra᾽el gathered themselves to David to Ḥevron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

And moreover in time past, even when Sha᾽ul was king, thou wast he who didst lead out Yisra᾽el and bring them in: and the Lord thy God said to thee, Thou shalt be shepherd over my people Yisra᾽el, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Yisra᾽el.

וַיָּבֹאוּ כׇּל־זִקְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְ חֶבְרוֹנָה וַיִּכְרֹת לָהֶם דָּוִיד בְּרִית בְּחֶבְרוֹן לִפְנֵי יְהֹוָה וַיִּמְשְׁחוּ אֶת־דָּוִיד לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל כִּדְבַר יְהֹוָה בְּיַד־שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃ {ס}
Therefore all the elders of Yisra᾽el came to the king to Ḥevron; and David made a covenant with them in Ḥevron before the Lord; and they anointed David king over Yisra᾽el, according to the word of the Lord by Shemu᾽el.

ויכרות להם דוד ברית. כאותו ברית שכרת יהוידע דכתיב (מלכים ב י״א:י״ז) ויכרות יהוידע את הברית בין ה' ובין המלך ובין העם להיות לעם לה' פתרון להיות לה' עבדים וגם בין המלך ובין העם להיות לו לעבדים כמשפט המלך וגם המלך לעשות כחוק לעבדיו ללחום מלחמותם:
לפני ה'. והלא לא היה המשכן בחברון אלא מהו לפני ה' כל מקום שעושין תנאי או כורתין ברית המקום שם הוא דוגמא ביפתח לפני ה' במצפה (שופטים י״א:י״א) ודוגמא ומעלה מעל בה' וכיחש בעמיתו (ויקרא ה׳:כ״א) כדמפרש בתורת כהנים:
אתה תרעה את עמי. על זה אמר דוד ה' רועי לא אחסר (תהילים כ״ג:א׳) אתה אומר לי אתה תרעה מה אני יכול לרעות אין הדבר תלוי בי אלא ה' רועי לא אחסר וגם אני לא אחסר לכם ודוגמא בשמואל (ב' כ"א) אז נשבעו אנשי דוד לו לאמר לא תצא עוד אתנו במלחמה ולא תכבה את נר ישראל אמר להם דוד כי אתה נרי ה' וה' יגיה חשכי (שם כ"ב):
