וְאֵלֶּה מִסְפַּר הַגִּבֹּרִים אֲשֶׁר לְדָוִיד יָֽשׇׁבְעָם בֶּן־חַכְמוֹנִי רֹאשׁ (השלושים) [הַשָּׁלִישִׁים] הֽוּא־עוֹרֵר אֶת־חֲנִיתוֹ עַל־שְׁלֹשׁ־מֵאוֹת חָלָל בְּפַעַם אֶחָֽת׃
And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Yoshov῾am, the son of Ḥakhmoni, the chief of the captains: he swung his spear over three hundred slain at one time.

עורר את חניתו. כאשר הוא נלחם במלחמה לא היה חוזר במלחמה עד שיהרג בחניתו ג' מאות חלל:
בן חכמוני. בשמואל (שמואל ב כ״ג:ח׳) כתוב תחכמוני הוא אביו ויפה כח האב מכח הבן שכתוב בו (שם) על שמונה מאות גבורים חלל בפעם אחת:

הוא בשלושה הגבורים. הוא בכלל ג' הגבורים כי הוא אחד מהם ושלשה אלו גבורים יותר משאר ל' ושלשה שנזכר בסמוך וכאן אינו מזכיר כי אם שנים ישבעם ואלעזר ובשמואל (שמואל ב' כ"ג:י"א) מזכיר אף השלישי דכתיב ואחריו שמא בן אגא הררי (שם א'):

והפלשתים נאספו שם למלחמה. שנזדרזו להנקם מישראל ומאותם גבורים שחרפו כמפורש בשמואל (ב' כג) בחרפם בפלשתים:

וַיִּבְקְעוּ הַשְּׁלֹשָׁה בְּמַחֲנֵה פְלִשְׁתִּים וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־מַיִם מִבּוֹר בֵּֽית־לֶחֶם אֲשֶׁר בַּשַּׁעַר וַיִּשְׂאוּ וַיָּבִאוּ אֶל־דָּוִיד וְלֹא־אָבָה דָוִיד לִשְׁתּוֹתָם וַיְנַסֵּךְ אֹתָם לַיהֹוָֽה׃
And those three broke through the host of the Pelishtim, and drew water out of the well of Bet-leĥem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the Lord,

ויבקעו השלשה במחנה פלשתים. בל"א (דורך ברעכן די שאר"א):
וישאבו. כשהפלשתים עומדים בפני הבור באו ג' גבורי ישראל ובקעו ביניהם ושאבו על כרחם:
וינסך אותם לה'. בר קפרא אומר חג הסוכות היה ונסכן על המזבח:
וַיֹּאמֶר חָלִילָה לִּי מֵאֱלֹהַי מֵעֲשׂוֹת זֹאת הֲדַם הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה אֶשְׁתֶּה בְנַפְשׁוֹתָם כִּי בְנַפְשׁוֹתָם הֱבִיאוּם וְלֹא אָבָה לִשְׁתּוֹתָם אֵלֶּה עָשׂוּ שְׁלֹשֶׁת הַגִּבּוֹרִֽים׃
and he said, far be it from me before my God, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives have they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.

כי בנפשותם הביאום. שמסרו עצמם להריגה על המים:

ואבשי אחי יואב הוא היה ראש השלושה. לאותם שלשה שבקעו במחנה פלשתים ושאבו המים ומה שאינו מזכיר את יואב עם הגבורים לפי שאין כבודו למנותו עם אלו כי הוא היה שר צבא ראש לכולם:
ולו שם בשלשה. אותו השם היה לו שגבורתו היתה כנגד כל גבורות כולם וטעות הוא:
מִן־הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁה בַשְּׁנַיִם נִכְבָּד וַיְהִי לָהֶם לְשָׂר וְעַד־הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁה לֹא־בָֽא׃ {ס}

ראש השלישים. ראש הגבורים כמו ושלשים על כלו (שמות י״ד:ז׳):
