וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד אֶל־גָּד צַר־לִי מְאֹד אֶפְּלָה־נָּא בְיַד־יְהֹוָה כִּֽי־רַבִּים רַחֲמָיו מְאֹד וּבְיַד־אָדָם אַל־אֶפֹּֽל׃
And David said to Gad, I am in great distress: let me fall rather into the hand of the Lord; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

אפלה נא ביד ה'. בדבר ששוה בכל עשירים ועניים:
כי רבים רחמיו. אולי ירחם אבל אויבינו לא ירחמו עלינו:
וַיִּתֵּן יְהֹוָה דֶּבֶר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּפֹּל מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל שִׁבְעִים אֶלֶף אִֽישׁ׃

וַיִּשְׁלַח הָאֱלֹהִים ׀ מַלְאָךְ ׀ לִֽירוּשָׁלַ͏ִם לְהַשְׁחִיתָהּ וּכְהַשְׁחִית רָאָה יְהֹוָה וַיִּנָּחֶם עַל־הָרָעָה וַיֹּאמֶר לַמַּלְאָךְ הַמַּשְׁחִית רַב עַתָּה הֶרֶף יָדֶךָ וּמַלְאַךְ יְהֹוָה עֹמֵד עִם־גֹּרֶן אׇרְנָן הַיְבוּסִֽי׃ {ס}
And God sent an angel to Yerushalayim to destroy it: and as he was about to destroy, the Lord beheld, and he relented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, now hold thy hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Yevusite.

צר לי מאד. אתה אומר בחר לך הקל שבהם קשה לי וצר לי מאוד עליו משל לאדם שאמרו לו הנך מת ובאיזה קבר רצונך שתקבר אצל אביך או אמך אמר להם אוי לאזנים שכך שומעו':
