Now for a long time Yisra᾽el has been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without Tora.
Now for a long time Yisra᾽el has been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without Tora.
Rashi
and without an instructing priest Since no one asks them words of Torah, the priests will not instruct you.
But when they in their trouble did turn to the Lord God of Yisra᾽el and sought him, he was found by them.
But when they in their trouble did turn to the Lord God of Yisra᾽el and sought him, he was found by them.
Rashi
And they returned to the Lord, the God of Israel, when they were in distress He means to say that now, when they were beset with troubles, they beseeched the Lord, the God of Israel, and they sought Him; therefore, He was found by them, and He saved you (sic) wherever you went.
And in those times there was no peace to him who went out, nor to him who came in, but there were great vexations upon all the inhabitants of the countries.
And in those times there was no peace to him who went out, nor to him who came in, but there were great vexations upon all the inhabitants of the countries.
Rashi
And in those times in those numerous days for Israel, [when they were] without a true God there was no peace for anyone going or coming, etc. Concerning Rehoboam it is written (above 12: 2): “Shishak, the king of Egypt, marched against Jerusalem, for they had betrayed the Lord.” Abijah also experienced many turmoils.
And they were broken in pieces; nation against nation, and city against city: for God did vex them with all manner of adversity.
And they were broken in pieces; nation against nation, and city against city: for God did vex them with all manner of adversity.
Rashi
And nation was crushed by nation - Heb. Another instance of this is (Num. 14:45): “and they struck them and crushed them (וַיַּכְּתוּם).”
וְאַתֶּם חִזְקוּ וְאַל־יִרְפּוּ יְדֵיכֶם כִּי יֵשׁ שָׂכָר לִפְעֻלַּתְכֶֽם׃ {ס}
Be strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.
Be strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.
Rashi
But you be strong to seek God.
Now there were many days for Israel without a true God until you came.
