וָֽאֶקְבְּצֵם אֶל־הַנָּהָר הַבָּא אֶֽל־אַהֲוָא וַנַּחֲנֶה שָׁם יָמִים שְׁלֹשָׁה וָאָבִינָה בָעָם וּבַכֹּהֲנִים וּמִבְּנֵי לֵוִי לֹא־מָצָאתִי שָֽׁם׃
And I assembled them at the river that flows into [the river] Ahava, and we camped there for three days. And I surveyed the people and the priests, but I found none of the sons of Levi there.

אל אהוא. אל אותו הנהר:
to Ahava to that river.
ונחנה שם. והיינו חונים שם:
and we encamped there and we were camping there.
ואבינה בעם. נתתי לבי להבין בעם אשר נקבצו עמי:
and I surveyed the people I directed my attention to survey the people who had gathered with me.
וָאֶשְׁלְחָה לֶאֱלִיעֶזֶר לַאֲרִיאֵל לִֽשְׁמַעְיָה וּלְאֶלְנָתָן וּלְיָרִיב וּלְאֶלְנָתָן וּלְנָתָן וְלִזְכַרְיָה וְלִמְשֻׁלָּם רָאשִׁים וּלְיוֹיָרִיב וּלְאֶלְנָתָן מְבִינִֽים׃
And I sent Eliezer, Shemayah, Elnathan, Yariv, Elnathan, Nathan, Zecharyah, Meshulam, heads [i.e., eminent men], and Yoyariv and Elnathan, sage men,

ואשלחה לאליעזר וגו'. ראשים, גדולים:
And I sent to Eliezer...the heads the great men.
מבינים. חכמים היו:
the wise men Heb. מְבִינִים, lit. understanding. They were wise men.
(ואוצאה) [וָאֲצַוֶּה] אוֹתָם עַל־אִדּוֹ הָרֹאשׁ בְּכָסִפְיָא הַמָּקוֹם וָאָשִׂימָה בְּפִיהֶם דְּבָרִים לְדַבֵּר אֶל־אִדּוֹ אָחִיו (הנתונים) [הַנְּתִינִים] בְּכָסִפְיָא הַמָּקוֹם לְהָֽבִיא־לָנוּ מְשָׁרְתִים לְבֵית אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃
And I charged them unto Iddo, the head, in the place Kasifya, and I placed in their mouths words to speak to Iddo [and to] his brother, the Nethinim, in the place Kasifya, to bring us ministrants to [serve in] the house of our G-d.

ואצוה אותם וגו'. שלחתים וצויתים לדבר אל אדו שהוא גדול וחשוב אשר בכספיא:
And I commanded them, etc. I sent them and commanded them to speak to Iddo, who was the greatest and most esteemed in Casiphia.
על אדו. אל אדו:
to Iddo Heb. עַל אִדוֹ, lit. about Iddo.
ואשימה בפיהם. שמתי בפיהם דברים לדבר בשליחותי אל אדו ואחיו שהם נתונים ומיושבים בכספיא להביא לנו משרתים לעבוד בבית המקדש:

בכספיא. שם מקום בבבל:
in Casiphia the name of a place in Babylon.
אל אדו אחיו. שם אדם:
Ahiv the name of a man.
הנתינים. כמו הנתינים ועל כן נכתב בוי"ו:
who were settled Heb. הַנְתִינִים, like הַנְתוּנִים, those who were settled. Therefore, it is written with a “vav.”
וַיָּבִיאּוּ לָנוּ כְּיַד־אֱלֹהֵינוּ הַטּוֹבָה עָלֵינוּ אִישׁ שֶׂכֶל {ס} מִבְּנֵי מַחְלִי בֶּן־לֵוִי בֶּן־יִשְׂרָאֵל וְשֵׁרֵבְיָה וּבָנָיו וְאֶחָיו שְׁמֹנָה עָשָֽׂר׃
And they brought us, according to the goodness of the hand of G-d upon us, a man of wisdom of the sons of Machli the son of Levi the son of Israel, and Sherevyah and his sons and his brothers, eighteen [(all Levites)].

כיד אלהינו. כאשר היתה הצלחתו של הקדוש ברוך הוא עלינו:
according to the hand of our God just as the success of the Holy One, blessed be He, was upon us.
איש שכל. חכם:
a man of intellect a wise man.
מבני מחלי וגו'. כולם הללו לוים:
of the sons of Mahli... All these were Levites.
אל הנהר הבא. אל הנהר הנובע:
to the flowing river Heb. אֶל הַנָהָר הַבָּא, lit. to the coming river.
