11:4

וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה כֹּה אָמַר יְהֹוָה כַּחֲצֹת הַלַּיְלָה אֲנִי יוֹצֵא בְּתוֹךְ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Moshe said, “This is what Adonoy has said, About the time of midnight, I will go out in the midst of Egypt.

Moshe said, “This is what Adonoy has said, About the time of midnight, I will go out in the midst of Egypt.

Rashi

ויאמר משה כה אמר ה'. בעמדו לפני פרעה נאמרה לו נבואה זו, שהרי משיצא מלפניו לא הוסיף ראות פניו:

Moshe said, “This is what Adonoy has said.” While still standing before Pharaoh this prophecy was told to him because once he left his (Pharaoh’s) presence he did not see his face ever again.

About the time of midnight. [כַּחֲצֹת לַיְלָה lit. means:] when the night is divided. כַּחֲצוֹת being the same form as בַּעֲלוֹת ( When [it] went up) or (בַּחֲרוֹת) when they became angry at us. This is its (כַּחֲצֹת לַיְלָה) plain meaning so that it fits within its context, for חֲצוֹת is not the noun of חֵצִי . Our Sages [however] explained it (כַּחֲצוֹת לַיְלָה) as: about the time of midnight. And they [go on to] say that Moshe used the word כַּחֲצוֹת which implies at about [midnight], either [slightly] before or after, and he did not say בַּחֲצוֹת (at midnight) lest Pharaoh’s stargazers make a mistake and say, “Moshe is a liar!” But God who knows His [exact] times and moments, [actually] said, “At midnight.”

11:5

וּמֵת כׇּל־בְּכוֹר בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם מִבְּכוֹר פַּרְעֹה הַיֹּשֵׁב עַל־כִּסְאוֹ עַד בְּכוֹר הַשִּׁפְחָה אֲשֶׁר אַחַר הָרֵחָיִם וְכֹל בְּכוֹר בְּהֵמָֽה׃

Every first-born in the land of Egypt will die, from the first-born of Pharaoh sitting on his throne, to the first-born of the [Egyptian] slave girl, behind the mill-stones, and every first-born animal.

Every first-born in the land of Egypt will die, from the first-born of Pharaoh sitting on his throne, to the first-born of the [Egyptian] slave girl, behind the mill-stones, and every first-born animal.

Rashi

עד בכור השבי. מה לקו השבויים, כדי שלא יאמרו יראתם תבעה עלבונם, והביאה פורענות על מצרים:

To the first-born of the captive. Why were the captives struck down? So that the captives should not say, their own god demanded [vengeance for] their humiliation and brought retribution upon the Egyptians.

מבכור פרעה עד בכור השפחה. כל הפחותים מבכור פרעה וחשובים מבכור השפחה היו בכלל. ולמה לקו בני השפחות, שאף הם היו משעבדים בהם ושמחים בצרתם:

From the first-born of Pharaoh to the first-born of the slave girl. All those less [important] than the first-born of Pharaoh and more [important] than the first-born of the slave girl are included [in this description]. Why were the first-born of the slave girls struck? Because they too enslaved them (the Israelites) and rejoiced in their (the Israelites’) oppression.

וכל בכור בהמה. לפי שהיו עובדין לה, וכשהקב"ה נפרע מן האומה עובדי כוכבים, נפרע מאלהיה (מכילתא פי"ג):

And every first-born animal. Because they (the Egyptians) worshipped it. When God punishes an idol worshipping nation He punishes its gods [first].

11:6

וְהָיְתָה צְעָקָה גְדֹלָה בְּכׇל־אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם אֲשֶׁר כָּמֹהוּ לֹא נִהְיָתָה וְכָמֹהוּ לֹא תֹסִֽף׃

There will be a great cry [of anguish] throughout the entire land of Egypt, the likes of which there never was and like there never will be.

There will be a great cry [of anguish] throughout the entire land of Egypt, the likes of which there never was and like there never will be.

11:7

וּלְכֹל ׀ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא יֶֽחֱרַץ־כֶּלֶב לְשֹׁנוֹ לְמֵאִישׁ וְעַד־בְּהֵמָה לְמַעַן תֵּֽדְעוּן אֲשֶׁר יַפְלֶה יְהֹוָה בֵּין מִצְרַיִם וּבֵין יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

But among all the B’nei Yisrael, a dog will not sharpen its tongue [growl] at man or animal. You will then know that Adonoy distinguishes between Egypt and Yisrael.

But among all the B’nei Yisrael, a dog will not sharpen its tongue [growl] at man or animal. You will then know that Adonoy distinguishes between Egypt and Yisrael.

Rashi

A dog will not sharpen its tongue. I say that [יֶחֱרַץ] is a term meaning sharp. Similarly “לֹא חָרַץ his tongue towards any man of the B’nei Yisroel.” [לֹא חָרַץ meaning:] He did not sharpen. [or:] אָז תֶּחֶרֳץ — “Then you will utter a sharp sound. [or:] לְמוֹרַג חָרוּץ — “A sharp thresher.” [or:] “מַחְשְׁבוֹת חָרוּץ” — “The thoughts of a sharp one” [חָרוּץ meaning:] a sharp and clever person. [or:] “You bring wealth to the hand of the חָרוּצִים” [חָרוּצִים meaning:] the clever ones — sharp merchants.

אשר יפלה. יבדיל:

That Adonoy distinguishes. [יַפְלֶה means] He will make a distinction.

11:8

וְיָרְדוּ כׇל־עֲבָדֶיךָ אֵלֶּה אֵלַי וְהִשְׁתַּֽחֲווּ־לִי לֵאמֹר צֵא אַתָּה וְכׇל־הָעָם אֲשֶׁר־בְּרַגְלֶיךָ וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן אֵצֵא וַיֵּצֵא מֵֽעִם־פַּרְעֹה בׇּחֳרִי־אָֽף׃ {ס}

Then all these, your servants, will come down to me, and prostrate themselves saying, ‘Go! You and all the people that follow you. Then I will go out.” He [Moshe] then left Pharaoh in great anger.

Then all these, your servants, will come down to me, and prostrate themselves saying, ‘Go! You and all the people that follow you. Then I will go out.” He [Moshe] then left Pharaoh in great anger.

Rashi

וירדו כל עבדיך. חלק כבוד למלכות (זבחים קב.), שהרי בסוף ירד פרעה בעצמו אליו בלילה ואמר קוּמוּ צְאוּ מִתֹוךְ עַמִי, ולא אמר לו משה מתחלה וירדת אלי והשתחוית לי:

Then all your servants will come down [Moshe] showed respect to royalty [by using this phrase]. For ultimately Pharaoh himself came down to him at night and said: “Arise! get out from among my people!” though Moshe [out of respect] had not initially said, “You will come down and bow to me.”

אשר ברגליך. ההולכים אחר עצתך והלוכך:

That follow you. [Meaning:] those who follow your advice and ways.

ואחרי כן אצא. עם כל העם מארצך:

Then I will go out — together with all the people from your land.”

ויצא מעם פרעה. כשגמר דבריו יצא מלפניו:

He then left Pharaoh. [But only after] concluding his words did he (Moshe) leave his presence.

בחרי אף. על שאמר לו אל תוסף ראות פני:

In great anger. Because he (Pharaoh) had said to him, “Do not see my face again!” (v. 28).
