וַיֹּסֶף אַף־יְהֹוָה לַחֲרוֹת בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וַיָּסֶת אֶת־דָּוִד בָּהֶם לֵאמֹר לֵךְ מְנֵה אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאֶת־יְהוּדָֽה׃
Adonoy's anger was again kindled against Yisroel. he enticed Dovid against saying, "Go, count Yisroel and Yehudah."

וַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶל־יוֹאָב ׀ שַׂר־הַחַיִל אֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹ שֽׁוּט־נָא בְּכׇל־שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִדָּן וְעַד־בְּאֵר שֶׁבַע וּפִקְדוּ אֶת־הָעָם וְיָדַעְתִּי אֵת מִסְפַּר הָעָֽם׃ {ס}
The king said to Yoav the general of the army that was with him, "Go to all the tribes of Yisroel from Don until Be'er Shevah and number the people [in order] that I should be able to know, the count of the people."
