12:1

The men of Ephraim were called together, and crossed northward. They declared to Yiftoch, "Why did you cross to wage war against the Bnei Ammon without calling on us to accompany you? We shall burn down your home over you!"

Rashi

And crossed northward. They crossed the Yardein and travelled north in trans-Yardein to Gilod.

12:2

Yiftoch retorted to them, "I was a man at war, I and my people, against the Bnei Ammon—extremely so. I cried out to you, but you would not rescue me from their hand.

Yiftoch retorted to them, "I was a man at war, I and my people, against the Bnei Ammon—extremely so. I cried out to you, but you would not rescue me from their hand.

12:3

When I saw that you would not rescue, I placed my life in my hands and crossed to the Bnei Ammon, and Adonoy delivered them into my hand. Why did you come up to me today to fight me?"

When I saw that you would not rescue, I placed my life in my hands and crossed to the Bnei Ammon, and Adonoy delivered them into my hand. Why did you come up to me today to fight me?"

12:4

Yiftoch mobilized all the men in Gilod, and waged war against Ephraim. The men of Gilod struck down Ephraim, since the contemptibles among Ephraim had said, "What are you, Gilod, amidst Ephraim and Menashe?"

Rashi

Since the contemptibles of Ephraim had said, "What are you ,Gilod?" The lowliest in Ephraim would mock Gilod, saying, "Of what significance are you, Gilod, among Ephraim and among Menasheh?" This is Targum Yonasan's interpretation.

12:5

The Gilodites captured the Yardein crossings from Ephraim. Then it happened that, when the contemptibles of Ephraim requested passage, the Gilodites would say to them, "Are you an Ephrasite?" and they would reply in the negative.

Rashi

The Gilodites captured the Yardein crossings. They posted sentries at the crossing areas.

12:6

They would then say to them, "Say Shiboles, please," but they would say, "Siboleth," as they were not able to pronounce it properly. Then they would detain them, and execute them at the Yardein crossings. At that time there fell from Ephraim, forty two thousand men.

Rashi

Say Shiboles please. May I cross this river flow?1Shiboles” is translated as “flow”.

They were not proficient in proper pronunciation. They were speech deficient.
