שִׁיר הַֽמַּעֲלוֹת אֶל־יְהֹוָה בַּצָּרָתָה לִּי קָרָאתִי וַֽיַּעֲנֵֽנִי׃

יְֽהֹוָה הַצִּילָה נַפְשִׁי מִשְּׂפַת־שֶׁקֶר מִלָּשׁוֹן רְמִיָּֽה׃
Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.

משפת שקר. זרעו של הרשע שצדין את הבריות בפיהם בעלילות רשע:
מַה־יִּתֵּן לְךָ וּמַה־יֹּסִיף לָךְ לָשׁוֹן רְמִיָּֽה׃
What shall be given to thee? or what shall be done to thee, thou false tongue?

מה יתן לך. הקב"ה:
ומה יוסיף לך. שמירה ומחיצות הרי את נתונה לפנים משתי מחיצות:
חִצֵּי גִבּוֹר שְׁנוּנִים עִם גַּחֲלֵי רְתָמִֽים׃

חצי גבור שנונים. והרי את הורגת במקום רחוק כחץ:
עם גחלי רתמים. כל הגחלים כבו מבחוץ כבו מבפנים ואלו כבו מבחוץ ולא מבפנים ד"א מה יתן לך מה סופו של הקב"ה לגזור עליך חצי גבורים עם גחלי רתמים חצים מלמעלה וגיהנם מלמטה:
אֽוֹיָה־לִי כִּי־גַרְתִּי מֶשֶׁךְ שָׁכַנְתִּי עִֽם־אׇהֳלֵי קֵדָֽר׃
Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshekh, that I dwell in the tents of Qedar!

אויה לי. אמרה כנסת ישראל כי כבר לקית בגליות רבים הרי גרתי משך עם בני יפת במלכות פרס ויון ומשך:
רַבַּת שָֽׁכְנָה־לָּהּ נַפְשִׁי עִם שׂוֹנֵא שָׁלֽוֹם׃
My soul has long dwelt with haters of peace.

אני שלום. עמהם:
וכי אדבר. עליהם שלום המה באים להלחם בי:
שיר המעלות. שיאמרו הלוים אותו על חמש עשרה מעלות היורדות מעזרת ישראל עד עזרת נשים ויש כאן ט"ו מזמורים של שיר המעלות ורבותינו אמרו שיסדן דוד להעלות את התהום כמו שמפורש במסכת סוכה, ולפי אגדה פתרונו שיר למאה עולות:
