שִׁיר הַֽמַּעֲלוֹת בְּשׁוּב יְהֹוָה אֶת־שִׁיבַת צִיּוֹן הָיִינוּ כְּחֹלְמִֽים׃

אָז יִמָּלֵא שְׂחוֹק פִּינוּ וּלְשׁוֹנֵנוּ רִנָּה אָז יֹאמְרוּ בַגּוֹיִם הִגְדִּיל יְהֹוָה לַעֲשׂוֹת עִם־אֵֽלֶּה׃
Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then they said among the nations, The Lord has done great things for them.

הִגְדִּיל יְהֹוָה לַעֲשׂוֹת עִמָּנוּ הָיִינוּ שְׂמֵחִֽים׃

שׁוּבָה יְהֹוָה אֶת־[שְׁבִיתֵנוּ] (שבותנו) כַּאֲפִיקִים בַּנֶּֽגֶב׃

כאפיקים בנגב. כאפיקי מים בארץ יבשה שמלחלחין אותה כך נהיה מרטיבין בשובך את שבותינו אשר הזורעים בה בארץ ציה בדמעה דואגים שסבורים שמא לא תצמח, ברנה קוצרין על ידי אפיקי המים כשהם משולחין בה:
הַזֹּרְעִים בְּדִמְעָה בְּרִנָּה יִקְצֹֽרוּ׃

הָלוֹךְ יֵלֵךְ ׀ וּבָכֹה נֹשֵׂא מֶשֶׁךְ־הַזָּרַע בֹּא־יָבֹא בְרִנָּה נֹשֵׂא אֲלֻמֹּתָֽיו׃ {פ}
He who goes weeping on his way, bearing a bag of seed, shall come back with a joyful shout, carrying his sheaves.

הלוך ילך ובכה וגו'. כך ישראל זורעין לפני הקב"ה צדקה בדמעה בגלות וברנה יקצורו כשתשלם משכורתם לעתיד:
