וַיְהִי בִּימֵי אָחָז בֶּן־יוֹתָם בֶּן־עֻזִּיָּהוּ מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה עָלָה רְצִין מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲרָם וּפֶקַח בֶּן־רְמַלְיָהוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל יְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִם לַמִּלְחָמָה עָלֶיהָ וְלֹא יָכֹל לְהִלָּחֵם עָלֶֽיהָ׃
And it came to pass in the days of Aĥaz the son of Yotam, the son of ῾Uzziyyahu, king of Yehuda, that Reżin the king of Aram, and Peqaĥ the son of Remalyahu, king of Yisra᾽el, went up to Yerushalayim to war against it, but could not prevail against it.

וַיֻּגַּד לְבֵית דָּוִד לֵאמֹר נָחָה אֲרָם עַל־אֶפְרָיִם וַיָּנַע לְבָבוֹ וּלְבַב עַמּוֹ כְּנוֹעַ עֲצֵי־יַעַר מִפְּנֵי־רֽוּחַ׃ {ס}
And it was told the house of David, saying, Aram is confederate with Efrayim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest are moved with the wind.

ויגד לבית דוד. לפי שרשע היה, לא הזכיר שמו:
נחה ארם על אפרים. נתחבר מלך ארם על מלך ישראל לבא עליך נחה לשון נקבה על שהמלכות נחה פושי"ר בלעז לשון וינח בכל גבול מצרים (שמות ו):
וינע לבבו. לפי שכבר נלחם בו כל אחד מהם בפני עצמו ויכלו לו שנאמר ויתנהו ה' ביד מלך ארם וגו' (ד"ה ב כח) אומר ויהרג פקח בן רמליה ק"כ אלף איש שניהם בדברי הימים (שם):
כנוע עצי יער. קול אילני סרק ישמע יותר מכל אילני פירי כדאיתא בבראשית רבה:
ויהי בימי אחז. מה ראה הכתוב לייחסו אלא מפני שסופו של הכתוב לומר ולא יכול להלחם עליה ולמדך שזכות אבות עמדה לו אמרו מלאכי השרת לפני הקב"ה ווי (ס"א) מי הוא זה שמלך רשע זה אמר להם בן יותם הוא בן עוזיהו הוא אבותיו היו צדיקים לפיכך אי אפשי לפשוט ידי בו הדא הוא ולא יכול להלחם עליה מפני זכות אבותיו (בבראשית רבה):
