עַד־מָתַי תֶּאֱבַל הָאָרֶץ וְעֵשֶׂב כׇּל־הַשָּׂדֶה יִיבָשׁ מֵרָעַת יֹֽשְׁבֵי־בָהּ סָפְתָה בְהֵמוֹת וָעוֹף כִּי אָֽמְרוּ לֹא יִרְאֶה אֶת־אַחֲרִיתֵֽנוּ׃
How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of the whole field wither? for the wickedness of them that dwell there, the beasts and the birds are consumed; because they said, He shall not see our last end.

כי אמרו. יושבי הארץ הזאת:
לא יראה את אחריתנו. אין גלוי לפניו מה יהיה בסופינו:
כִּי אֶת־רַגְלִים ׀ רַצְתָּה וַיַּלְאוּךָ וְאֵיךְ תְּתַחֲרֶה אֶת־הַסּוּסִים וּבְאֶרֶץ שָׁלוֹם אַתָּה בוֹטֵחַ וְאֵיךְ תַּעֲשֶׂה בִּגְאוֹן הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃
If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? And dost thou feel secure in the land of peace? how wilt thou do in the wild country of the Yarden?

כי את רגלים רצתה וילאוך. קרוביך הכהנים כמותך ואנשי עירך באים להורגך את רגלים. עם רגלים פיאוניד"ש בלעז:
ואיך תתחרה את הסוסים. לרוץ את הסוסים כלומר ומה קרוביך הכהנים באים להרגך כל שכן שיקומו להרגך שרי יהודה וזהו קצפי עליהם וזו היא הצלחת האויב וכן ת"י דנא תיובתא וגו', ומדרש רבותינו אם על שכר שלש פסיעות שרץ נבוכדנצר לכבודי בימי מרודך בלאדן אתה תמה שהרביתי גדולתו כל כך מה תתמה עוד כשתראה שילום שכר שאשלם לצדיקים שרצו לפני כסוסים:
תתחרה. אאטיר"ש בלעז:
ובארץ שלום. אשר אתה בוטח שם הלאוך:
ואיך תעשה בגאון. שרי יהודה, וגאון הירדן משל הוא לפי שהוא מקום אריות ונמרים וכן למדנו יונתן בהרבה מקומות וכאן תירגם ואכדין את מדמי לקבל חיות ברא די ברום ירדנא והנה כאריה יעלה מגאון הירדן (לקמן ט) ת"י בשתי מקומות כאריה דסליק מרום ירדנא:
כִּי גַם־אַחֶיךָ וּבֵית־אָבִיךָ גַּם־הֵמָּה בָּגְדוּ בָךְ גַּם־הֵמָּה קָרְאוּ אַחֲרֶיךָ מָלֵא אַל־תַּאֲמֵן בָּם כִּֽי־יְדַבְּרוּ אֵלֶיךָ טוֹבֽוֹת׃ {ס}
For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they deal treacherously with thee: indeed, they are in full cry after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words to thee.
