Bil’am arose in the morning and said to Balak's dignitaries: “Go back to your land, for Adonoy refuses to allow me to go with you.”

Bil’am arose in the morning and said to Balak's dignitaries: “Go back to your land, for Adonoy refuses to allow me to go with you.”

Rashi

To go with you. But with higher ranking officials than you. We learn that he was arrogant, and was unwilling to reveal that he was under God’s domination, except in insolent terms. Therefore, “Balak persisted. . .”

22:14

Moav's dignitaries got up, and came to Balak and said: “Bil’am refuses to go with us.”

Moav's dignitaries got up, and came to Balak and said: “Bil’am refuses to go with us.”

22:15

Balak persisted and sent dignitaries in greater number and of higher rank than these.

Balak persisted and sent dignitaries in greater number and of higher rank than these.

22:16

They came to Bil’am and said to him: “The following is a message from Balak the son Tzipor: ‘Please do not refuse to come to me.

They came to Bil’am and said to him: “The following is a message from Balak the son Tzipor: ‘Please do not refuse to come to me.

22:17

For I will honor you greatly and whatever you tell me, I will do, if you would just please come and curse this people for me.’”

For I will honor you greatly and whatever you tell me, I will do, if you would just please come and curse this people for me.’”

Rashi

I will honor you greatly. More than you have received in the past, I will give you.

22:18

Bil’am answered and said to Balak's servants: “Even if Balak would give me silver and gold enough to fill his house, I cannot transgress the word of Adonoy my God, by doing anything small or great.

Bil’am answered and said to Balak's servants: “Even if Balak would give me silver and gold enough to fill his house, I cannot transgress the word of Adonoy my God, by doing anything small or great.

Rashi

Silver and gold enough to fill his house. We learn that he was avaricious, and he coveted the money of others. He said, “He should rightfully give me all his gold and silver, since he would have to hire great armies, which may or may not succeed, whereas I will certainly succeed.”

I cannot transgress. He was forced to reveal that he was dominated by others. And he prophesied here that he would be unable to nullify the blesings which the patriarchs received by word of the Divine Presence.

22:19

Now, you also, please remain here overnight, and I will get to know what more will Adonoy tell me.”

Now, you also, please remain here overnight, and I will get to know what more will Adonoy tell me.”

Rashi

You also. His mouth ensnared him. You, too, will, in the end, leave in frustration, like the first ones.

What more will [Adonoy tell me]. He will not alter his word from a blessing to a curse. Would that he does not add a blessing. Here, he prophesied that He (God) would bless them further through him (Bil’am).

22:20

God appeared to Bil’am that night and said to him: “If the men have come to call you, arise and go with them; however, whatever I will say to you, you will do.”

God appeared to Bil’am that night and said to him: “If the men have come to call you, arise and go with them; however, whatever I will say to you, you will do.”

Rashi

If [the men have come] to call you. If the invitation is for you, any you expect remuneration, then rise and go with them.

However. In spite of you, whatever I will say to you, you will do. Nevertheless, “Bil’am went.” He said, “perhaps I can convince him to agree.”
