13:1

Avram went up from Egypt—he, his wife, all that he had, and Lot with him—to the south.

Avram went up from Egypt; he, his wife, and all that he had, together with Lot into the south.

Rashi

The verse says Avram was very heavy — that is, very wealthy — in livestock, in silver and in gold. The sentence has no action in it: it simply describes how much Avram had.

Avram was very wealthy in livestock, silver and gold.

Avram went out on his journeys. He traveled from the Negev — the south — up to Beit El, until he reached the place where his tent had been at the beginning, the spot between Beit El and Ai.

He continued on his travels from the south to Beis-Eil, until the place where he originally had [set up] his tent, between Beis-Eil and Ai.

Avram came to the place of the altar that he had made there at first. And there Avram called in the name of Hashem.

To the site of the altar which he made there at first; and there Avram called [prayed] in the Name of Adonoy.

And also Lot, who was going along with Avram, had sheep, cattle and tents.

Lot who accompanied Avram also had sheep, cattle and tents.

The land did not carry them, so that they could live together, because their wealth was great, and they were not able to live together. The verse says the same thing twice: first that the land could not hold them together, and at the end that they could not live together, with the reason in the middle.

The land was unable to support them that they might dwell together, for their wealth was so great that they were unable to dwell together.

There was a quarrel between the herdsmen of Avram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle. The Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.

There was a quarrel between the herdsmen of Avram’s flocks and the herdsmen of Lot’s flocks. The Canaanites and the Perizzites were then living in the land.

Avram said to Lot: Please, let there not be a quarrel between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds, because we are men, brothers.

Avram said to Lot: Please [Now], let there not be strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are kinsmen.

Lot lifted his eyes and saw the whole plain of the Jordan. It was all watered. This was before Hashem destroyed Sedom and Amorah. It was like the garden of Hashem, like the land of Egypt, as one comes to Tzoar.

Lot raised his eyes and saw the entire Jordan Plain, that it was [an] abundantly watered [place]; before Adonoy destroyed Sedom and Amorah, it was like Adonoy’s garden, like the land of Egypt, going towards Zoar.
