30:1

When it happens that there come upon you all these statements, the blessing and the curse that I have set before you; and you will restore to your perception amid all the nations where Adonoy, your God, has exiled you.

When it happens that there come upon you all these statements, the blessing and the curse that I have set before you; and you will restore to your perception amid all the nations where Adonoy, your God, has exiled you.

30:2

You will return to Adonoy, your God, and obey Him exactly as I am commanding you today, you and your sons, wholeheartedly and with your whole being.

You will return to Adonoy, your God, and obey Him exactly as I am commanding you today, you and your sons, wholeheartedly and with your whole being.

30:3

Adonoy, your God, will bring back your returnees and will be merciful toward you; and He will return and gather you from all the peoples that Adonoy, your God, has dispersed you there.

Adonoy, your God, will bring back your returnees and will be merciful toward you; and He will return and gather you from all the peoples that Adonoy, your God, has dispersed you there.

Rashi

Adonoy your God will bring [lit. come] back your returnees. It should have written ‘Bring back’ your returnees. The Rabbis derive from here, that the Divine Presence, with all due reverence, resides with Yisroel in the suffering of their exile, so that, when they are redeemed, He ascribes redemption to Himself — He shall return with them. One may explain additionally: The day of the ingathering of exiles is as momentous and difficult as if He, Himself, would need to carry, literally in His grasp, every individual from his place, as it is said, “You shall be plucked, one at a time, Bnei Yisroel.” And even with regard to the exiles of other nations we find this, “I shall bring [lit. come] back the returnees of Moav,” [“I shall bring [lit. come] back the returnees of Egypt”].

30:4

If your exiled one will be at the edge of the heavens, from there will Adonoy, your God, gather you and from there will He take you.

If your exiled one will be at the edge of the heavens, from there will Adonoy, your God, gather you and from there will He take you.

30:5

And Adonoy, your God, will bring you to the land that your forefathers inherited and you will inherit it; and He will benefit you and multiply you more than your forefathers.

And Adonoy, your God, will bring you to the land that your forefathers inherited and you will inherit it; and He will benefit you and multiply you more than your forefathers.

30:6

And Adonoy, your God, will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love Adonoy, your God, wholeheartedly and with all your being in order that you live.

And Adonoy, your God, will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love Adonoy, your God, wholeheartedly and with all your being in order that you live.

30:7

Adonoy, your God, will place all these oath-curses upon your enemies and upon your foes who chased you.

Adonoy, your God, will place all these oath-curses upon your enemies and upon your foes who chased you.

30:8

And you will turn back and obey Adonoy; and you will perform all His commandments that I am commanding you today.

And you will turn back and obey Adonoy; and you will perform all His commandments that I am commanding you today.

30:9

Adonoy, your God, will give you surplus in all your endeavors, in the fruit of your belly, and in the offspring of your animals, and in the produce of your soil—for benefit; for Adonoy will return to rejoice over you for benefit as He rejoiced over your forefathers.

Adonoy, your God, will give you surplus in all your endeavors, in the fruit of your belly, and in the offspring of your animals, and in the produce of your soil—for benefit; for Adonoy will return to rejoice over you for benefit as He rejoiced over your forefathers.

30:10

כִּי תִשְׁמַע בְּקוֹל יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לִשְׁמֹר מִצְוֺתָיו וְחֻקֹּתָיו הַכְּתוּבָה בְּסֵפֶר הַתּוֹרָה הַזֶּה כִּי תָשׁוּב אֶל־יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּכׇל־לְבָבְךָ וּבְכׇל־נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃ {ס}

When you obey Adonoy, your God, to guard His commandments and His statutes, written in this Torah scroll; when you turn back to Adonoy, your God, wholeheartedly and with all your being.

When you obey Adonoy, your God, to guard His commandments and His statutes, written in this Torah scroll; when you turn back to Adonoy, your God, wholeheartedly and with all your being.

30:11

For this mitzvah that I am commanding you today; it is not abstruse to you nor is it distant.

For this mitzvah that I am commanding you today; it is not abstruse to you nor is it distant.

Rashi

It is not abstruse to you. It is not concealed from you, as it is said, כִּי יִפָּלֵא — “If . . . is concealed from you,” וַתֵּרֶד פְלָאִים — [meaning] “she has plummeted into concealment,” concealed, wrapped in a cover.

30:12

It is not in heaven, [for you] to say, ‘‘Who will go up to heaven for us, and acquire it for us, and inform us of it, and we will fulfill it?’’

It is not in heaven, [for you] to say, ‘‘Who will go up to heaven for us, and acquire it for us, and inform us of it, and we will fulfill it?’’

Rashi

It is not in heaven. For if it were in heaven, you would be required to ascend in quest of it so that you could study it.

30:13

Nor is it overseas, [for you] to say, ‘‘Who will travel overseas for us, and acquire it for us, and inform us of it, and we will fulfill it?’’

Nor is it overseas, [for you] to say, ‘‘Who will travel overseas for us, and acquire it for us, and inform us of it, and we will fulfill it?’’

30:14

כִּֽי־קָרוֹב אֵלֶיךָ הַדָּבָר מְאֹד בְּפִיךָ וּבִֽלְבָבְךָ לַעֲשֹׂתֽוֹ׃ {ס}

For the matter is extremely close to you; in your mouth and in your mind to fulfill it.

For the matter is extremely close to you; in your mouth and in your mind to fulfill it.

Rashi

For [the matter] is close to you. The Torah was presented to you in written and oral form.

30:15

See, I have placed before you today life and good, and death and bad.

See, I have placed before you today life and good, and death and bad.

Rashi

Life and goodness. One hinges on the other. If you act with goodness, then you have life, but if you act wickedly, then you have death. Scripture proceeds in explaining how.

30:16

For which I command you this day, to love Adonoy, your God, to go in His ways and to guard His commandments and His statutes and His laws; and you will live and you will flourish, and Adonoy, your God, will bless you in the land that you are coming there to inherit.

For which I command you this day, to love Adonoy, your God, to go in His ways and to guard His commandments and His statutes and His laws; and you will live and you will flourish, and Adonoy, your God, will bless you in the land that you are coming there to inherit.

Rashi

For which I command you this day, to love. Here you have goodness. On it, hinges “so that you will live and flourish” — here you have life.

30:17

But if your heart strays and you do not listen, and you are misled, and you prostrate yourself to other gods and worship them.

But if your heart strays and you do not listen, and you are misled, and you prostrate yourself to other gods and worship them.

Rashi

But if your heart strays. Here you have wickedness.

30:18

I tell you today that you shall certainly perish; you will not remain long on the land that you are crossing the Yardein to come there to inherit.

I tell you today that you shall certainly perish; you will not remain long on the land that you are crossing the Yardein to come there to inherit.

Rashi

That you shall certainly perish. Here you have death.

30:19

I invoke, as witnesses against you this day, heaven and earth: Life and death have I placed before you, blessing and curse; you choose life in order that you live, you and your descendants,

I invoke, as witnesses against you this day, heaven and earth: Life and death have I placed before you, blessing and curse; you choose life in order that you live, you and your descendants,

Rashi

I invoke, as witnessess against you, this day, heaven and earth. As they endure eternally, so that when evil befalls you, they will bear witness that I warned you concerning all of this. Another interpretation of “I invoke as witnesses against you this day, heaven etc.” The Holy One, may He be blessed, said to Yisroel, ‘Gaze at the heavens, which I created to serve you, have they, perhaps, altered their prescribed functions? Perhaps the sun failed to rise in orbit from the east to illuminate the whole world, as it is said, “The sun rises, and then the sun sets”? Gaze at the earth, which I created to serve you, has it, perhaps, altered its prescribed functions? Perhaps you planted it, and it failed to produce, or perhaps you planted wheat, and it produced barley? Now take these, which were created neither for gain, nor for loss — if meritorious, they reap no reward, and if sinful, they suffer no punishment — yet they did not alter their prescribed functions; then you, who, if meritorious, reap reward, and if sinful, suffer punishment, most certainly so.’

Choose life. I instruct you to select the portion of life, like a man who tells his son, ‘Select, for yourself, an excellent portion in my estate’; then he guides him to the excellent portion, and says to him, ‘Choose this for yourself.’ Concerning this it is said, “Adonoy is my apportioned share, my drinking cup; You have upheld my lot” — You have placed my hand on the excellent lot, as if to say, ‘Take this for yourself.’

30:20

לְאַֽהֲבָה אֶת־יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לִשְׁמֹעַ בְּקֹלוֹ וּלְדׇבְקָה־בוֹ כִּי הוּא חַיֶּיךָ וְאֹרֶךְ יָמֶיךָ לָשֶׁבֶת עַל־הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יְהֹוָה לַאֲבֹתֶיךָ לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּֽלְיַעֲקֹב לָתֵת לָהֶֽם׃ {פ}

To love Adonoy, your God, to obey Him and to cling to Him; for He is your life and your longevity, to live on the soil that Adonoy swore to your forefathers—to Avrohom, to Yitzchok, and to Yaakov—to give them.

To love Adonoy, your God, to obey Him and to cling to Him; for He is your life and your longevity, to live on the soil that Adonoy swore to your forefathers—to Avrohom, to Yitzchok, and to Yaakov—to give them.
