וּמִֽמְּנַשֶּׁה נָפְלוּ עַל־דָּוִיד בְּבֹאוֹ עִם־פְּלִשְׁתִּים עַל־שָׁאוּל לַמִּלְחָמָה וְלֹא עֲזָרֻם כִּי בְעֵצָה שִׁלְּחֻהוּ סַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים לֵאמֹר בְּרָאשֵׁינוּ יִפּוֹל אֶל־אֲדֹנָיו שָׁאֽוּל׃
And some of Menashshe deserted to David, when he came with the Pelishtim against Sha᾽ul to battle: but they did not help them: for the lords of the Pelishtim took counsel and sent him away, saying, He will desert to his master Sha᾽ul to the jeopardy of our heads.

בבואו עם פלשתים על שאול למלחמה. באותה מלחמה שנהרג בה שאול:
ולא עזרום. ח"ו שעזרו לפלשתים אלא בעצה שלחוהו סרני פלשתים, אלא כי עצה נתיעצו הסרנים לשלחו לביתו כי אמרו בראשינו יפול אל אדוניו דוגמת נפלו אל דוד:
בְּלֶכְתּוֹ אֶל־צִֽיקְלַג נָפְלוּ עָלָיו ׀ מִֽמְּנַשֶּׁה עַדְנַח וְיוֹזָבָד וִידִֽיעֲאֵל וּמִיכָאֵל וְיוֹזָבָד וֶאֱלִיהוּא וְצִלְּתָי רָאשֵׁי הָאֲלָפִים אֲשֶׁר לִמְנַשֶּֽׁה׃
As he went to Żiqlag, there deserted to him of Menashshe, ῾Adnah, and Yozavad, and Yedi῾a᾽el, and Mikha᾽el, and Yozavad, and Elihu, and Żilletay, captains of the thousands that were of Menashshe.

וְהֵמָּה עָזְרוּ עִם־דָּוִיד עַֽל־הַגְּדוּד כִּֽי־גִבּוֹרֵי חַיִל כֻּלָּם וַיִּהְיוּ שָׂרִים בַּצָּבָֽא׃

על הגדוד. של עמלקים כשנשבו נשיו כי באותו פרק היה כי בלכתו אל צקלג כששלחוהו סרני פלשתים ובא אל צקלג כבר נשבו:
כִּי לְעֶת־יוֹם בְּיוֹם יָבֹאוּ עַל־דָּוִיד לְעׇזְרוֹ עַד־לְמַחֲנֶה גָדוֹל כְּמַחֲנֵה אֱלֹהִֽים׃ {פ}

כי לעת יום ביום יבואו על דוד לעזרו. פתרונו מה לך לספר יותר מי ומי באו אליו אלא סוף דבר בכל עת ועת באים אל דוד:
עד למחנה גדול כמחנה אלהים. פתרון לא היה המחנה של דוד להיות כך גדול אלא כי מהשם היה המחנה כך גדול שבאו לו בעצת אלהים וזהו כמחנה אלהים ודוגמא מחנה אלהים דיעקב (בראשית ל״ב:ג׳) ויש לומר מרוב חיילות קרהו מחנה אלהים:
