וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים כִּי־נִמְשַׁח דָּוִיד לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּעֲלוּ כׇל־פְּלִשְׁתִּים לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת־דָּוִיד וַיִּשְׁמַע דָּוִיד וַיֵּצֵא לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃
And when the Pelishtim heard that David was anointed king over all Yisra᾽el, all the Pelishtim went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.

וַיַּעֲלוּ בְּבַֽעַל־פְּרָצִים וַיַּכֵּם שָׁם דָּוִיד וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד פָּרַץ הָאֱלֹהִים אֶת־אוֹיְבַי בְּיָדִי כְּפֶרֶץ מָיִם עַל־כֵּן קָרְאוּ שֵֽׁם־הַמָּקוֹם הַהוּא בַּעַל פְּרָצִֽים׃
So they came up to Ba῾al-perażim; and David smote them there. Then David said, God has broken through my enemies by my hand like a bursting flood of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Ba῾al-perażim.

ויעלו בבעל פרצים. שנקרא אחרי כן בעל פרצים על שם מעשה אשר פרץ האלהים את אויביו בידו שנסו ונפרצו זה מעל זה:
כפרץ מים. כגלי מים שנפרצי' ממקומם ונופלים למקום אחר:
וַיַּעַזְבוּ שָׁם אֶת־אֱלֹהֵיהֶם וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִיד וַיִּשָּׂרְפוּ בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ {פ}

וישמעו פלשתים כי נמשח דויד למלך על כל ישראל ויעלו כל פלשתים. לפי שפלשתים היו מושלים כל הימים עד שבא שאול ודוד כדכתיב (שופטים ט״ו:י״א) בשמשון ויאמרו לשמשון הלא ידעת כי מושלים בנו פלשתים וכן (בשמואל א ד׳:ט׳) התחזקו והיו לאנשים פלשתים פן תעבדו לעברים כאשר עבדו לכם וגו' וכן למעלה בפרשה זו ויראו כל איש ישראל וגומר ויעזבו עריהם וינוסו ויבאו פלשתים וישבו בהם באותן ז' שנים שמלך דוד בחברון לבד לא אמרו דבר ולא חששו על שמלך דוד על חברון כי אמרו מה לנו שמא נציב או שר מנהו לדוד על חברון אבל כשנמשח למלך על כל ישראל אז עלו כל הפלשתים לבקש את דוד שלא רצו שיהא מלך בישראל אלא שעוד הם יהיו מושלים עליהם:
