לֵךְ וְאָֽמַרְתָּ אֶל־דָּוִיד עַבְדִּי כֹּה אָמַר יְהֹוָה לֹא אַתָּה תִּבְנֶה־לִּי הַבַּיִת לָשָֽׁבֶת׃

כִּי לֹא יָשַׁבְתִּי בְּבַיִת מִן־הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר הֶעֱלֵיתִי אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה וָאֶהְיֶה מֵאֹהֶל אֶל־אֹהֶל וּמִמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

ואהיה מאהל אל אהל וממשכן. כלומר ואהיה מתהלך מאהל אל אהל וממשכן אל משכן מגלגל לשילה ומשילה לנוב ומנוב לגבעון ואף על גב שהייתי מטלטל מאהל אל אהל וממשכן למשכן:
בְּכֹל אֲשֶֽׁר־הִתְהַלַּכְתִּי בְּכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵל הֲדָבָר דִּבַּרְתִּי אֶת־אַחַד שֹׁפְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתִי לִרְעוֹת אֶת־עַמִּי לֵאמֹר לָמָּה לֹא־בְנִיתֶם לִי בֵּית אֲרָזִֽים׃
Everywhere where I have walked among all Yisra᾽el, did I speak a word to any of the judges of Yisra᾽el whom I commanded to be shepherds to my people, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar wood?

בכל אשר התהלכתי בכל ישראל הדבר דברתי את אחד שופטי ישראל אשר צויתי לרעות את עמי לאמר למה לא בניתם לי בית ארזים. זה לא עשיתי ואף הם מאליהם לא עלה במחשבתם לבנות לי בית כאשר עלה במחשבתך:
וְעַתָּה כֹּֽה־תֹאמַר לְעַבְדִּי לְדָוִיד {ס} כֹּה אָמַר יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת אֲנִי לְקַחְתִּיךָ מִן־הַנָּוֶה מִֽן־אַחֲרֵי הַצֹּאן לִֽהְיוֹת נָגִיד עַל עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

כה אמר ה' צבאות. מה שעלה במחשבתך אני אשלם לך:
מן הנוה. נוה הרועים וגדרות צאן:
ויהי בלילה ההוא וגו'. מפורש במדרש אמר לו הקב"ה לנתן הנביא האדם הזה שאני שולח אליו נדרן הוא צא ואמור לו עד שלא ישבע לבנותו לא אתה תבנה הבית לשבתי, ד"א האדם שאני שולחך אצלו זריז הוא לך אמור לו קודם שישכור פועלים:
