וְלִבְנֵי אַהֲרֹן מַחְלְקוֹתָם בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן נָדָב וַאֲבִיהוּא אֶלְעָזָר וְאִיתָמָֽר׃

וַיָּמׇת נָדָב וַֽאֲבִיהוּא לִפְנֵי אֲבִיהֶם וּבָנִים לֹא־הָיוּ לָהֶם וַֽיְכַהֲנוּ אֶלְעָזָר וְאִיתָמָֽר׃

וימת נדב ואביהוא וגו'. ובנים לא היו להם לפי שלא היו להם בנים כיהנו אלעזר ואיתמר במקומם אבל אם היו לנדב ואביהו בנים היו קודמים לאלעזר ואיתמר בכהונה גדולה שכן מצינו (בעזרא ג') שהרי יהוצדק אביו של יהושע היה ויהוצדק ועזרא בני שריה היו דכתיב (לעיל ח') ושריה הוליד את יהוצדק ובעזרא (ה) כתיב עזרא בן שריה ויהוצדק הלך בגולה לבבל וכשעלו מבבל עלה יהושע ושימש ולא שימש עזרא לפי שהיה יהוצדק הבכור וקדמו בין אחיו הבכור כדכתיב בנבואת חגי (ז) יהושע בן יהוצדק הכהן הגדול:
וַיֶּחָלְקֵם דָּוִיד וְצָדוֹק מִן־בְּנֵי אֶלְעָזָר וַאֲחִימֶלֶךְ מִן־בְּנֵי אִיתָמָר לִפְקֻדָּתָם בַּעֲבֹדָתָֽם׃

ואחימלך מן בני איתמר. זה אחימלך בן אביתר כדמוכח בסמוך (כד ו) ויכתבם שמעיה וגו' עד ואחימלך בן אביתר:
וַיִּמָּצְאוּ בְֽנֵי־אֶלְעָזָר רַבִּים לְרָאשֵׁי הַגְּבָרִים מִן־בְּנֵי אִיתָמָר וַֽיַּחְלְקוּם לִבְנֵי אֶלְעָזָר רָאשִׁים לְבֵית־אָבוֹת שִׁשָּׁה עָשָׂר וְלִבְנֵי אִיתָמָר לְבֵית אֲבוֹתָם שְׁמוֹנָֽה׃
And there were more chief men found of the sons of El῾azar than of the sons of Itamar; and thus they were divided. Among the sons of El῾azar there were sixteen heads of fathers’ houses and among the sons of Itamar eight for the houses of their fathers.

ויחלקום לבני אלעזר ראשים לבית אבות ששה עשר. מתחלה במשכן שילה לא היו כ"א י"ו משמרו' ח' מאלעזר וח' מאיתמר כמפורש במסכ' תענית וכשראה דוד שהיו ראשי הגבורים לאלעזר רבים חלקם לכל משמר ומשמר של אלעזר לשנים והעמידם על י"ו משמרות ומשמרת בני איתמר העמיד על מעמד משמר כבראשונה על שמנה משמרות וכן מוכיח בסמוך בית אב אחד אחז לאלעזר ואחז אחז לאיתמר, כלומר כאחוז למעמד למשמרת שבמשכן כמו כן העמידן דוד עתה בבית המקדש:
וַיַּחְלְקוּם בְּגוֹרָלוֹת אֵלֶּה עִם־אֵלֶּה כִּֽי־הָיוּ שָׂרֵי־קֹדֶשׁ וְשָׂרֵי הָאֱלֹהִים מִבְּנֵי אֶלְעָזָר וּבִבְנֵי אִיתָמָֽר׃ {ס}
