20:1

Dovid fled from Nayos in Romoh, and came and said before Yonoson, "What have I done? What is my transgression and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?"

Dovid fled from Nayos in Romoh, and came and said before Yonoson, "What have I done? What is my transgression and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?"

20:2

He said to him, "Far be it! You shall not die! Behold, my father does not do anything great or small without revealing it to me. Why then should my father conceal this matter from me? It is not so."

He said to him, "Far be it! You shall not die! Behold, my father does not do anything great or small without revealing it to me. Why then should my father conceal this matter from me? It is not so."

20:3

Dovid swore to him again, and said, "Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and said [to himself], 'Yonoson should not know of this, lest he be saddened.' However, as Adonoy lives, and by your life, there is but a step between me and death."

Dovid swore to him again, and said, "Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and said [to himself], 'Yonoson should not know of this, lest he be saddened.' However, as Adonoy lives, and by your life, there is but a step between me and death."

Rashi

There is but a step. With one step I left from being before him,1Rashi’s interpretation follows the literal meaning. Others interpret this phrase figuratively, i.e., there is but a short distance between me and death—Radak. and he drove the spear into the wall. With that step, I was saved from death.

20:4

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוֹנָתָן אֶל־דָּוִד מַה־תֹּאמַר נַפְשְׁךָ וְאֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּֽךְ׃ {פ}

Yonoson said to Dovid, "Whatever your soul says I will do for you."

Yonoson said to Dovid, "Whatever your soul says I will do for you."
