ה' רועי. במדבר הזה שאני הולך בו בטוח אני שלא אחסר כלום:
בִּנְאוֹת דֶּשֶׁא יַרְבִּיצֵנִי עַל־מֵי מְנֻחוֹת יְנַהֲלֵֽנִי׃
He makes me to lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters.

בנאות דשא. בנוה דשאין לפי שהתחיל לדמות מזונותיו למרעה בהמה שאמר ה' רועי נופל על הלשון של ה' רועי נאות דשא, ומזמור זה אמר דוד ביער חרת, למה נקרא שמו יער חרת שהיה מנוגב כחרס והרטיבו הקב"ה מטוב של העולם הבא (מדרש תהלים):
נַפְשִׁי יְשׁוֹבֵב יַֽנְחֵנִי בְמַעְגְּלֵי־צֶדֶק לְמַעַן שְׁמֽוֹ׃

נפשי ישובב. רוחי שהופג בצרות ובמנוסה ישובב לקדמותו:
במעגלי צדק. בדרכי מישור שלא אפול ביד אויבי:
גַּם כִּֽי־אֵלֵךְ בְּגֵיא צַלְמָוֶת לֹא־אִירָא רָע כִּי־אַתָּה עִמָּדִי שִׁבְטְךָ וּמִשְׁעַנְתֶּךָ הֵמָּה יְנַֽחֲמֻֽנִי׃
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.

בגיא צלמות. בארץ חושך ועל מדבר זיף אמר, כל צלמות לשון חושך פירשו דונש בן לברט:
שבטך ומשענתך. יסורים שבאו עלי ומשען שאני בטוח על חסדך שניהם ינחמוני שיהיו לי לסלוח עון ובטוח אני שתערוך לפני שלחן היא המלכות:
תַּעֲרֹךְ לְפָנַי ׀ שֻׁלְחָן נֶגֶד צֹרְרָי דִּשַּׁנְתָּ בַשֶּׁמֶן רֹאשִׁי כּוֹסִי רְוָיָֽה׃

דשנת בשמן ראשי. כבר נמשחתי על פיך למלך:
כוסי רויה. לשון שובע:
אַךְ ׀ טוֹב וָחֶסֶד יִרְדְּפוּנִי כׇּל־יְמֵי חַיָּי וְשַׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית־יְהֹוָה לְאֹרֶךְ יָמִֽים׃ {פ}
