מפחד אויב. אלו האחשדרפנים שנתיעצו עליו שנאמר (דניאל ו׳:ה׳) אדין סרכיא ואחשדרפניא הוו בעין עלה להשכחה לדניאל:
תַּסְתִּירֵנִי מִסּוֹד מְרֵעִים מֵרִגְשַׁת פֹּעֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃

מרגשת פעלי און. שהם מתרגשים לבקש לי עלילות מות כדכתיב ארגישו על מלכא וגו' (שם):
אֲשֶׁר שָׁנְנוּ כַחֶרֶב לְשׁוֹנָם דָּרְכוּ חִצָּם דָּבָר מָֽר׃

דרכו חצם. הוא לשונם הרע:
לִירֹת בַּמִּסְתָּרִים תָּם פִּתְאֹם יֹרֻהוּ וְלֹא יִירָֽאוּ׃

יספרו לטמון מוקשים. ידברו אל המלך בערמה דברים טמונים שאפילו המלך לא הבין למה היו עושין כך והם היו מתכוונים לטמון לדניאל מוקשים להלכד בהם שאמרו לדריוש אתיעטו כל סרכי מלכותא וגו' לקיימא קיים מלכא וגו' (שם) שלא יתפלל שום אדם תפלתו לפני שום אלוה חוץ ממך עד שלשים יום:
יַחְפְּֽשׂוּ־עוֹלֹת תַּמְנוּ חֵפֶשׂ מְחֻפָּשׂ וְקֶרֶב אִישׁ וְלֵב עָמֹֽק׃

יחפשו עולות. מבקשים עלילות כמו שנאמר (שם) הוו בעין עילה השכחה לדניאל:
טמנו. בלבם ולא גילו דעתם את חפש העלילה המחופש על ידם וקרב מחשבותם עומק לבם:
וקרב איש. איש מהם כל אחד ואחד טמן מחשבתו:
וַיֹּרֵם אֱלֹהִים חֵץ פִּתְאוֹם הָיוּ מַכּוֹתָֽם׃

ויורם אלהים. ירה אותם לגוב האריות כדכתיב (שם) ואמר מלכא והיתיו לגבריא אליך די אכלו קרצוהי די דניאל ולגוב אריותא רמו וגו':
וַיַּכְשִׁילוּהוּ עָלֵימוֹ לְשׁוֹנָם יִתְנֹדְדוּ כׇּל־רֹאֵה בָֽם׃

ויכשילהו עלימו לשונם. הכשלון שדימו להכשילו עלימו נהפך לשונם:
יתנודדו. בראשם להניע ראש ולשחוק עליהם כל ראה בם:
וַיִּֽירְאוּ כׇּל־אָדָם וַיַּגִּידוּ פֹּעַל אֱלֹהִים וּֽמַעֲשֵׂהוּ הִשְׂכִּֽילוּ׃

ישמח צדיק. דניאל:
ויתהללו כל ישרי לב. יתפארו על יושר לבם וישתבחו בעצמם כי בטוחים הם שהקב"ה בעזרתם:
שמע אלהים קולי בשיחי. מזמור זה דרשוהו בעלי אגדת תהלים על דניאל שהושלך לגוב אריות ויפה נופל כל לשון המזמור על האגדה צפה דוד ברוח הקדש כל המאורע לו והתפלל עליו שדניאל מזרעו היה, כמו שנאמר לחזקיה (ישעיהו ל״ט:ז׳) ומבניך אשר תוליד יקחו והיו סריסים בהיכל מלך בבל אלו דניאל חנניה מישאל ועזריה:
