וַיְהִי מִקְצֵה שִׁבְעַת יָמִים {פ}
וַיְהִי דְבַר־יְהֹוָה אֵלַי לֵאמֹֽר׃
And it came to pass at the end of seven days that the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

בֶּן־אָדָם צֹפֶה נְתַתִּיךָ לְבֵית יִשְׂרָאֵל וְשָׁמַעְתָּ מִפִּי דָּבָר וְהִזְהַרְתָּ אוֹתָם מִמֶּֽנִּי׃
Son of man, I have made thee a watchman to the house of Yisra᾽el: and when thou shalt hear a word at my mouth, thou shalt give them warning from me.

בְּאׇמְרִי לָרָשָׁע מוֹת תָּמוּת וְלֹא הִזְהַרְתּוֹ וְלֹא דִבַּרְתָּ לְהַזְהִיר רָשָׁע מִדַּרְכּוֹ הָרְשָׁעָה לְחַיֹּתוֹ הוּא רָשָׁע בַּעֲוֺנוֹ יָמוּת וְדָמוֹ מִיָּדְךָ אֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃
When I say to the wicked man, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thy hand.

וְאַתָּה כִּי־הִזְהַרְתָּ רָשָׁע וְלֹא־שָׁב מֵֽרִשְׁעוֹ וּמִדַּרְכּוֹ הָרְשָׁעָה הוּא בַּעֲוֺנוֹ יָמוּת וְאַתָּה אֶֽת־נַפְשְׁךָ הִצַּֽלְתָּ׃
Yet if thou warn the wicked man, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast saved thy soul.

וּבְשׁוּב צַדִּיק מִצִּדְקוֹ וְעָשָׂה עָוֶל וְנָתַתִּי מִכְשׁוֹל לְפָנָיו הוּא יָמוּת כִּי לֹא הִזְהַרְתּוֹ בְּחַטָּאתוֹ יָמוּת וְלֹא תִזָּכַרְןָ צִדְקֹתָו אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה וְדָמוֹ מִיָּדְךָ אֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃
Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thy hand.

ונתתי מכשול לפניו. כשהוא עושה דבריו בהצנע ומראה עצמו כצדיק אני נותן עבירה מפורסמת לפניו כדי לגלות מעשיו וכשאביא רעה עליו לא יהרהרו אחרי:
ולא תזכרנה. צדקותיו פירשו רבותינו בתוהא על הראשונות שמתחרט על הצדקות הראשונות שעשה:
וְאַתָּה כִּי הִזְהַרְתּוֹ צַדִּיק לְבִלְתִּי חֲטֹא צַדִּיק וְהוּא לֹֽא־חָטָא חָיוֹ יִֽחְיֶה כִּי נִזְהָר וְאַתָּה אֶֽת־נַפְשְׁךָ הִצַּֽלְתָּ׃ {פ}
Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he does not sin, then he shall surely live, because he is warned; and thou hast saved thy soul.

צופה נתתיך. למה אתה שותק הלא כצופה שמעמידים על המגדלים לראות אם יבאו גייסות לעיר יתקע בשופר להזהיר את העם שיתכנסו ויתחזקו כן נתתיך להזהירם להשמר מן הפורענות שלא אביאנו עליהם:
