לָכֵן כֹּה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יֱהֹוִה יַעַן אֲשֶׁר גָּבַהְתָּ בְּקוֹמָה וַיִּתֵּן צַמַּרְתּוֹ אֶל־בֵּין עֲבוֹתִים וְרָם לְבָבוֹ בְּגׇבְהֽוֹ׃
Therefore thus says the Lord God; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he has shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;

וְאֶתְּנֵהוּ בְּיַד אֵיל גּוֹיִם עָשׂוֹ יַֽעֲשֶׂה לוֹ כְּרִשְׁעוֹ גֵּרַשְׁתִּֽהוּ׃

ביד אל גוים. ביד קשה שבגוים ביד נבוכדנצר נתתיו דאמר מר שנה ראשונה כבש ננוה:
עשו יעשה לו. נבוכדנצר ככל רצוני:
וַיִּכְרְתֻהוּ זָרִים עָרִיצֵי גוֹיִם וַֽיִּטְּשֻׁהוּ אֶל־הֶהָרִים וּבְכׇל־גֵּאָיוֹת נָפְלוּ דָלִיּוֹתָיו וַתִּשָּׁבַרְנָה פֹֽרֹאתָיו בְּכֹל אֲפִיקֵי הָאָרֶץ וַיֵּרְדוּ מִצִּלּוֹ כׇּל־עַמֵּי הָאָרֶץ וַֽיִּטְּשֻֽׁהוּ׃
And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs were broken by all the water courses of the land; and all the peoples of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.

ויטשוהו. ויפלוהו לארץ כמו ויטש על המחנה (במדבר י״א:ל״א):
עַל־מַפַּלְתּוֹ יִשְׁכְּנוּ כׇּל־עוֹף הַשָּׁמָיִם וְאֶל־פֹּרֹאתָיו הָיוּ כֹּל חַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃

על מפלתו ישכנו וגו'. כתרגומו על מפלת קטילוהי:
לְמַעַן אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יִגְבְּהוּ בְקוֹמָתָם כׇּל־עֲצֵי־מַיִם וְלֹֽא־יִתְּנוּ אֶת־צַמַּרְתָּם אֶל־בֵּין עֲבֹתִים וְלֹֽא־יַעַמְדוּ אֵלֵיהֶם בְּגׇבְהָם כׇּל־שֹׁתֵי מָיִם כִּֽי־כֻלָּם נִתְּנוּ לַמָּוֶת אֶל־אֶרֶץ תַּחְתִּית בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי אָדָם אֶל־יוֹרְדֵי בֽוֹר׃ {פ}
so that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves in their height, nor shoot up their top among the thick boughs, and that their trunks do not tower on high, all that drink water: for they are all delivered to death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.

עצי מים. שהם רכים וחלשים אלא שענפיהם רכים וארוכין מחמת לחלוחית המים אין להם לדמות עצמן לארזי עדן כלומר לא היה לו להתגאות על ישראל ולא יעמדו עליהם:
אל בין עבותים. לא יתגאו להשוות גבורתם שותה מים אל עצי עבותים:
יען אשר גבהת בקומה. כך אמרתי לאשור:
