וְהָיָה כִּֽי־יְבַצַּע אֲדֹנָי אֶת־כׇּל־מַֽעֲשֵׂהוּ בְּהַר צִיּוֹן וּבִירוּשָׁלָ͏ִם אֶפְקֹד עַל־פְּרִֽי־גֹדֶל לְבַב מֶלֶךְ־אַשּׁוּר וְעַל־תִּפְאֶרֶת רוּם עֵינָֽיו׃
Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord has performed his whole work upon mount Żiyyon and on Yerushalayim, I will punish the fruit of the proud heart of the king of Ashshur, and the glory of his high looks.

אפקוד על פרי גודל לבב מלך אשור. על אשר הפרה והרבה גודל לבב מלך אשור להתהלל בכחו על שקר פרי גודל קריישמנ"ס דגרנדיי"א בלע"ז של לב סנחריב:
תפארת רום עיניו. על שנתפאר בגאותו, תפארת ונטמנ"ט בלע"ז:
רום עיניו. גסות רוחו כעניין שנא' גבה עינים ורחב לבב (תהילים ק״א:ה׳):
כִּי אָמַר בְּכֹחַ יָדִי עָשִׂיתִי וּבְחׇכְמָתִי כִּי נְבֻנוֹתִי וְאָסִיר ׀ גְּבוּלֹת עַמִּים (ועתידתיהם) [וַעֲתֽוּדֹתֵיהֶם] שׁוֹשֵׂתִי וְאוֹרִיד כַּאבִּיר יוֹשְׁבִֽים׃
For he says, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the mighty number of their inhabitants.

כי אמר בכח ידי עשיתי. כל גבורתי לא מאת הקב"ה:
נבונותי. חכמתי:
ועתידותיהם. מעמדם ומצבם:
ואוריד. הורדתים מגדולתם:
כביר יושבים. יושבים רבים, כביר פולשור"ש:
וַתִּמְצָא כַקֵּן ׀ יָדִי לְחֵיל הָעַמִּים וְכֶֽאֱסֹף בֵּיצִים עֲזֻבוֹת כׇּל־הָאָרֶץ אֲנִי אָסָפְתִּי וְלֹא הָיָה נֹדֵד כָּנָף וּפֹצֶה פֶה וּמְצַפְצֵֽף׃
And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathers eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or chirped.

כקן. כקיני עופות הפקר:
וכאסוף ביצים עזובות. וכאשר יאסוף איש ביצים עזובות שעזבתם אמם ואין מוחה בידם לכסות עליהם:
נודד כנף ופוצה פה ומצפצף. כל הל' הזה נופל בעופות לפי שדימה אותם הגולים לקן צפרים ולביצים עזובות אמר לשון זה לא צפצפו עליה' האב והאם:
הֲיִתְפָּאֵר הַגַּרְזֶן עַל הַחֹצֵב בּוֹ אִם־יִתְגַּדֵּל הַמַּשּׂוֹר עַל־מְנִיפוֹ כְּהָנִיף שֵׁבֶט וְאֶת־מְרִימָיו כְּהָרִים מַטֶּה לֹא־עֵֽץ׃ {פ}
Shall the ax boast itself against him that hews with it? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that wields it? as if the rod should shake them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up them that are no wood!

היתפאר הגרזן. הקב"ה אומר לא היה לך להתהלל בזאת כי אינך אלא כגרזן שלי ואני החוצב בך נפרע על ידך מאויבי אתה המשור ואני המניפו וכי דרך המשור להתהלל על מניפו משור מייר"א בלע"ז:
כהניף שבט את מרימיו. כאלו היה השבט מניף את עצמו ואת יד המרימו והלא אין שבט מניפו אלא האדם:
כהרים מטה לא עץ. לא העץ הוא המרים אלא האדם הוא המרים:
והיה כי יבצע וגו'. אבל לא היה כמו שדימה אלא מאחר שיגמור הקב"ה את כל מעשהו ונקמתו בישראל ובקצה ערי יהודה ומאותה יראה יכנעו בני ציון וירושלים לשוב אלי אודיע למלך אשור כי לא בכוחו גבר:
