בִּשְׁנַת־מוֹת הַמֶּלֶךְ אָחָז הָיָה הַמַּשָּׂא הַזֶּֽה׃
In the year that king Aĥaz died was this burden.

אַֽל־תִּשְׂמְחִי פְלֶשֶׁת כֻּלֵּךְ כִּי נִשְׁבַּר שֵׁבֶט מַכֵּךְ כִּֽי־מִשֹּׁרֶשׁ נָחָשׁ יֵצֵא צֶפַע וּפִרְיוֹ שָׂרָף מְעוֹפֵֽף׃
Rejoice not thou, O Peleshet entire, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a viper, and his fruit shall be a venomous flying serpent.

אל תשמחי פלשת כולך. שהרימות ראש בימי אחז שהי' רשע שגרם לו רשעו שנמסר בידכם כענין שנאמר (דברי הימים ב כ״ח:י״ח) ובפלשתים פשטו בערי השפלה וגו':
כי נשבר שבט מכך. כי נחלשה ונשפלה מלכות בית דוד שהיו למודים להכות בכם כמו שמצינו בדוד וכן עוזיהו מלך יהודה שהכה אתכם כענין שנאמר (ד"ה ב' כו) ויצא וילחם בפלשתים ויפרוץ את חומת גת:
כי משרש נחש. משורש אותו נחש יצא צפע שהוא קשה מנחש ומי היה זה חזקיה שנאמר בו (מלכים ב י״ח:ח׳) הוא הכה את הפלשתים ואת עזה ואת גבולה ממגדל נוצרים עד עיר מבצר:
ופריו שרף מעופף. ת"י ויהון עובדוהי בכון כחיוי:
וְרָעוּ בְּכוֹרֵי דַלִּים וְאֶבְיוֹנִים לָבֶטַח יִרְבָּצוּ וְהֵמַתִּי בָרָעָב שׇׁרְשֵׁךְ וּשְׁאֵרִיתֵךְ יַהֲרֹֽג׃
And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety: and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant.

ורעו בכורי דלים. ורעו בימי שרי ישראל שהן עכשיו דלים מפניכם, בכורי לשון שרים כמו (תהילים פ״ט:כ״ח) גם אני בכור אתנהו:
הֵילִילִֽי שַׁעַר זַֽעֲקִי־עִיר נָמוֹג פְּלֶשֶׁת כֻּלֵּךְ כִּי מִצָּפוֹן עָשָׁן בָּא וְאֵין בּוֹדֵד בְּמוֹעָדָֽיו׃

כי מצפון עשן בא. פורעניות קשה כעשן תבא עליהם מצפון, עזה וגבוליה שהכה חזקיה היו בדרומה של ארץ ישראל במקצוע דרומית מערבית נמצאת ארץ ישראל לה מצפון וכן מצינו בספרי בהאזינו בקשו לברוח כלפי דרום היו מסגירין אותן שנאמ' (עמוס ב׳:א׳) על שלשה פשעי עזה למדנו שעזה בדרום:
ואין בודד במועדיו. ת"י ולית דמאחר בזמנוהי בגדודים שיעד לבא עליכם ואין מאחר פעמיו להיות בודד ובא בדד לבדו אלא כלם כאחד יבואו בחזקה:
וּמַֽה־יַּעֲנֶה מַלְאֲכֵי־גוֹי כִּי יְהֹוָה יִסַּד צִיּוֹן וּבָהּ יֶחֱסוּ עֲנִיֵּי עַמּֽוֹ׃ {פ}
What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the Lord has founded Żiyyon, and the poor of his people shall shelter in it.

ומה יענה מלאכי גוי. ומה יגידו בימי חזקיהו מלאכי ישראל ההולכים לבשר בשורות כן יגידו ה' יסד בציון הקים בה מלך הגון וחזק ה' עמו:
ובה יחסו עניי עמו. אף מעשרת השבטי' באים שם כמו שמפורש (בד"ה ב ל) ששלח חזקיהו מלאכים בכל גבול ישראל לשוב להקב"ה:
בשנת מות המלך אחז. ומלך חזקיהו בנו היה המשא הזה על פלשתים:
