כִּי כֹה אָמַר אֵלַי אֲדֹנָי לֵךְ הַעֲמֵד הַֽמְצַפֶּה אֲשֶׁר יִרְאֶה יַגִּֽיד׃
For thus has the Lord said to me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he sees.

וְרָאָה רֶכֶב צֶמֶד פָּרָשִׁים רֶכֶב חֲמוֹר רֶכֶב גָּמָל וְהִקְשִׁיב קֶשֶׁב רַב־קָֽשֶׁב׃
And if he should see riders, pairs of horsemen, riders on asses, riders on camels; he should hearken diligently with much heed:

וראה רכב. ואני אראנו שם כמין רכב צמד פרשים אחד רוכב חמור ואחד רוכב גמל וסימן הוא לפרס ומדי:
והקשיב קשב. ושם ישמע בנבואתו כמין רוב הומיות תשואות חיילות:
וַיִּקְרָא אַרְיֵה עַל־מִצְפֶּה ׀ אֲדֹנָי אָנֹכִי עֹמֵד תָּמִיד יוֹמָם וְעַל־מִשְׁמַרְתִּי אָנֹכִי נִצָּב כׇּל־הַלֵּילֽוֹת׃

ויקרא אריה. הוא חבקוק, אריה בגי' כמניין חבקוק ישעיה נתנבא שעתיד חבקוק להתפלל על זאת ולומר כן:
על מצפה אד'. ה' אלהי על מצפה אנכי עומד תמיד יומם להודיעני על זאת:
וְהִנֵּה־זֶה בָא רֶכֶב אִישׁ צֶמֶד פָּרָשִׁים וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר נָפְלָה נָֽפְלָה בָּבֶל וְכׇל־פְּסִילֵי אֱלֹהֶיהָ שִׁבַּר לָאָֽרֶץ׃

והנה זה בא. כשיתפלל על כך יראה כמין רכב אדם וגו':
נפלה נפלה בבל. ת"י נפלת ואף עתידה למיפל, ב' נפילות שנה אחר שנה תחלה ע"י מדי ופרס ובשנה השניה ע"י שמים והיתה בבל צבי ממלכות כמהפכת סדום וכן מצינו בסדר עולם ובא בשנה השמועה זו של דריוש ואחריו בשנה השמועה והיתה בבל צבי ממלכות כמהפכת וגו' (לעיל יג):
מְדֻשָׁתִי וּבֶן־גׇּרְנִי אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַעְתִּי מֵאֵת יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הִגַּדְתִּי לָכֶֽם׃ {פ}
O my trodden one, and child of my threshing floor; that which I have heard of the Lord of hosts, the God of Yisra᾽el, have I declared to you.

מדושתי ובן גרני. תבואת קדש שלי ערימת חטי אשר נצטויתי מפי רוח הקדש לתקן אתכם בדרך הישרה כאדם הדש וזורה תבואתו בגורן:
אשר שמעתי. מאתו הגדתי לכם:
לך העמד המצפה. עתיד אחד מתלמידך לקרא תגר על מדותי על ארך שלוותה של בבל והוא חבקוק שעג עוגה ועמד בתוכה ואמר (חבקוק ב) על משמרתי אעמודה ומצפה לראות מה ידבר בי אמר הקב"ה לישעיה העמידהו לאותו מצפה והבטיחהו מאתי שיעמד על מצפהו ואשר יראה במפלתה של בבל יגיד:
