לָמָּה תֹאמַר יַעֲקֹב וּתְדַבֵּר יִשְׂרָאֵל נִסְתְּרָה דַרְכִּי מֵיְהֹוָה וּמֵאֱלֹהַי מִשְׁפָּטִי יַעֲבֽוֹר׃
Why sayst thou, O Ya῾aqov, and speakest, O Yisra᾽el, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?

נסתרה דרכי מה'. העלים מנגד עיניו כל מה שעבדנוהו והמשיל עלינו אות' שלא ידעוהו:
ומאלהי משפטי יעבור. העביר מלפניו משפט הגמול הטוב שהי' לו לשלם לאבותינו ולנו:
הֲלוֹא יָדַעְתָּ אִם־לֹא שָׁמַעְתָּ אֱלֹהֵי עוֹלָם ׀ יְהֹוָה בּוֹרֵא קְצוֹת הָאָרֶץ לֹא יִיעַף וְלֹא יִיגָע אֵין חֵקֶר לִתְבוּנָתֽוֹ׃
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, faints not, nor is he weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

בורא קצות הארץ וגו' אין חקר לתבונתו. ומי שיש לו כח כזה וחכמה כזו הוא יודע את המחשבות למה הוא מאחר טובתכם אלא כדי לכלות את הפשע ולהתם את החטאת ע"י היסורין:
נֹתֵן לַיָּעֵף כֹּחַ וּלְאֵין אוֹנִים עׇצְמָה יַרְבֶּֽה׃
He gives power to the faint; and to the powerless he increases strength.

נותן ליעף כח. וסופו להחליף כח לעייפותכם:
וְיִעֲפוּ נְעָרִים וְיִגָעוּ וּבַחוּרִים כָּשׁוֹל יִכָּשֵֽׁלוּ׃
Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

ויעפו נערים. גבורת הכשדי' המנוערים מן המצות תיעף:
ובחורים כשול יכשלו. אותם שהם עכשיו גבורים וחזקים יכשלו ואתם קוי ה' תחליפו כח חדש וחזק:
וְקוֹיֵ יְהֹוָה יַחֲלִיפוּ כֹחַ יַעֲלוּ אֵבֶר כַּנְּשָׁרִים יָרוּצוּ וְלֹא יִיגָעוּ יֵלְכוּ וְלֹא יִיעָֽפוּ׃ {ס}
but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

למה תאמר. עמי יעקב ותדבר בגלות:
