קֹרֵא דָגַר וְלֹא יָלָד עֹשֶׂה עֹשֶׁר וְלֹא בְמִשְׁפָּט בַּחֲצִי יָמָו יַעַזְבֶנּוּ וּבְאַחֲרִיתוֹ יִהְיֶה נָבָֽל׃
As the partridge sits on eggs, but hatches them not; so is he that gets riches, and not by right; he shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

ולא ילד. הקורא הזה מושך אחריו אפרוחים שלא ילד דגר. ציפצוף שמצפצף העוף בקולו למשוך אפרוחין אחריו ואלו שהקורא דגר לא ילכו אחריו משיגדלו שאינם מינו כך עושה עושר ולא במשפט:
יהיה נבל. מתקרי רשיעא:
כִּסֵּא כָבוֹד מָרוֹם מֵרִאשׁוֹן מְקוֹם מִקְדָּשֵֽׁנוּ׃

כסא כבוד וגו'. לפי שבא לומר כל עוזביך יבושו מתחיל בקילוסו של מקום ומדבר לפניו אתה שכסא כבוד ומרום מראשית בריאת עולם ומכוון כנגד מקדשנו:
מִקְוֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהֹוָה כׇּל־עֹזְבֶיךָ יֵבֹשׁוּ (יסורי) [וְסוּרַי] בָּאָרֶץ יִכָּתֵבוּ כִּי עָזְבוּ מְקוֹר מַֽיִם־חַיִּים אֶת־יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}
O Lord, the hope of Yisra᾽el, all that forsake Thee shall be ashamed, and they who depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters.
