לָכֵן כֹּה אָמַר יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת הִנְנִי צוֹרְפָם וּבְחַנְתִּים כִּי־אֵיךְ אֶֽעֱשֶׂה מִפְּנֵי בַּת־עַמִּֽי׃
Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, Behold, I will smelt them, and try them; for how else shall I do for the daughter of my people?

מפני בת עמי. מן קדם חובי כנישתא דישראל:
חֵץ (שוחט) [שָׁחוּט] לְשׁוֹנָם מִרְמָה דִבֵּר בְּפִיו שָׁלוֹם אֶת־רֵעֵהוּ יְדַבֵּר וּבְקִרְבּוֹ יָשִׂים אׇרְבּֽוֹ׃
Their tongue is a sharpened arrow; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he lies in wait for him.

חץ שחוט לשונם. משוך כמו זהב שחוט (מלכים א י׳:ט״ז) וכן ושחטה שטים (הושע ה׳:ב׳) טריי"ט בלעז לישנא אחרינא ל' שחיטה ממש טראנקא"ט בלעז וכן חברו מנחם וכן ת"י כגיר די מחריף:
ובקרבו. ת"י ובמעוהי:
הַעַל־אֵלֶּה לֹא־אֶפְקׇד־בָּם נְאֻם־יְהֹוָה אִם בְּגוֹי אֲשֶׁר־כָּזֶה לֹא תִתְנַקֵּם נַפְשִֽׁי׃ {ס}
Shall I not punish them for these things? says the Lord: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
