באדין. אז כאשר הגיע המכתב ליד דריוש:

Then then when the letter reached Darius’s hand.

שם טעם. צוה המלך הדבר:

gave an order The king ordered the matter.

ובקרו. ובדקו בבית הספרים שהאוצרות מונחים שם בבבל:

and they searched They searched in the library where the archives were stored in Babylon.

והשתכח באחמתא. ונמצא מכתב של מגילה אחת שם באחמתא כן פתרו אנשי הפתרון שהוא כלי העשוי לאגרות ולגליונים ולספרים והעמידוהו מגזרת חמת מים והאל"ף אשר בתיבה אינה עיקר כיתר המלין אשר בשאר ל' ארמית:

And there was found in a pouch And a text of one scroll was found there in an אַחְמְתָא. So did the interpreters interpret, that it is a receptacle made for letters, written sheets and books, and they established it from the root of (Gen. 21:14): “a skin of water (וְחֵמַת מַיִם),” and the “aleph” in the word is not a radical, like the rest of the Aramaic language.

בבירתא. באותה בירה אשר במדי המדינה:

in the citadel in that citadel that was in the province of Media.

וכן כתיב. וכן היה כתוב בתוכה זכרון שלה:

and so was written and so was written therein its memorandum.

בית אלהא בירושלים. בבית אלהים בירושלים מה יהא עליו הבית יבנה:

the House of God in Jerusalem regarding the House of God in Jerusalem; what should be with it? “The House should be built.”

אתר די דבחין. שהוא מקום שזובחים שם זבח:

a place where they offer up sacrifices which is a place where they offer up sacrifices.

ואושוהי מסובלין. וכותליו יהיו מיוסדין, כמו ואושיא יחיטו (לעיל):

and its walls should be founded Aram. וְאֻשּׁוֹהִי. And its walls should be founded, like (4:12): “and its walls (וְאֻשַּׁיָא) they have joined.”

רומיה אמין שתין. רום הבית ששים אמה וששים אמה רחבו:

its height sixty cubits the height of the House was sixty cubits, and sixty cubits was its width.

נדבכין. ל' כתלים וקירות הכתלים היו של אבן גלל, גלל מרמר"א בלע"ז:

rows Aram. נִדְבָּכִין, an expression for walls. The walls were of marble. marble Aram. גְּלָל (marmre in Old French).

ונדבך. וכותל של עץ חדש מבפנים כענין בנין הבית אשר בנה שלמה:

and a row and a wall of new wood from within, in the manner of the building of the Temple that Solomon built.

ונפקתא. והוצאה לצורך הבית ולשאר דברים אשר לבית תנתן להם מבית המלך:

and the expenditures And the expenditures for the needs of the House and for the other matters pertaining to the House shall be given them from the royal palace.

ואף מאני. ואף כלי הקדש של בית האלהים של זהב וכסף אשר נבוכדנצר הוציאם מן היכל שבירושלים והוליכם לבבל:

And also the vessels of and also the sacred vessels of the House of God, of gold and silver, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the Temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon.

והיבל. אשר הוליך:

let them be given over [as translated,] let them be given over.

יהתיבון. ינתנו:

and brought which he brought.

ויהך. ילך כל המעשה הזה להיכל אשר בירושלים למקומו:

and brought Let all this work be brought to the Temple that is in Jerusalem, to its place.

ותחת. ויהי מונח בביתו של הקב"ה:

and it shall be deposited And it shall be deposited in the House of the Holy One, blessed be He.

כען תתני וגו'. זו היא תשובה אשר השיב דריוש אל תתני ושתר בוזני:

Now, Tattenai This is the reply with which Darius answered Tattenai and Shethar-Bozenai.

די בעבר נהרה. לצד ארץ ישראל שהוא עבר הנהר לאותן שבבבל:

who are on the other side of the river to the side of the land of Israel, which is the other side of the river to those in Babylon

רחיקין הוו מן תמה. רחוקים תהיו משם מבנין בהמ"ק שלא תרפו ידי עושי המלאכה:

distance yourselves from there Distance yourselves from the building of the Temple, so that you do not disturb the workers.

דך. זה:

this [as translated,] this.

פחת יהודיא. שלטוני היהודים יעשו דבר זה:

the governors of the Jews The rulers of the Jews shall do this thing.

ולשבי יהודיא. ולזקני היהודים אני מצוה:

and to the elders of the Jews And to the elders of the Jews I command.

בית אלהא דך. בית אלהים זה:

this House of God [as translated,] this House of God.

ומני שים טעם. וממני יהיה צווי זה:

And from me shall be issued an order And from me this command will go forth.

למא די תעבדון. לאותו בנין המלאכה אשר תעשון עם זקני היהודים האלה לבנות ביתו של הקב"ה:

regarding what you shall do regarding that building, the work that you shall do with these elders of the Jews to build the House of the Holy One, blessed be He.

ומנכסי מלכא. מנכסי המלך יהיו עושים הבנין הזה:

and from the king’s property And from the king’s property they shall make ths building.

די מדת עבר נהרה. מן המס של עבר הנהר אשר למלך, מדת מס כמו מנדה בלו והלך (לעיל ד') אספרנא. מהרה יבנה הבנין אספרנה אישפלונטמנ"ט בלע"ז:

from the taxes of the other side of the river from the taxes of the other side of the river, which belong to the king. taxes Aram. מִדַּת, tax, like (4:13): “the king’s due (מִנְדָּה), the head tax, or the meal tax.” quickly Aram. אָסְפַּרְנָא. The building shall quickly be built; esploytosemant in Old French.

נפקתא תהוא מתיהבא. הוצאה תהיה ניתנת לאנשים האלה אשר לא יתבטלו ממלאכתן:

The expenses shall be given The expenses shall be given to these men so that they should not idle from their work.

ומה חשחן. ומה שיהיו חוששין:

And what they require and what they are concerned about.

ובני תורין. בני בקר ואילים וכבשים לעולות לאלהי השמים:

and young bulls young bulls, rams and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven.

וחנטין. לסלתות ומלח לקרבנות. ויין לנסכים. ושמן למנחות כאשר יאמרו הכהנים אשר בירושלים יהי נתון להם דבר יום ביומו:

wheat for fine flour. salt for sacrifices. wine for libations. and oil for the meal-offerings. When the priests who are in Jerusalem will say [what they need], that shall be given to them the requirements of each day on its day.

די לא שלו. בלא דיחוי שנ"צ דישטורבי"ר בלע"ז:

without delay Aram. דִּי לָא שָּׁלוּ (son destorber in Old French).

די להון. למען אשר יהיו מקריבים ניחוחים לאלהי השמים ויהיו מתפללים על חיי המלך ובניו:

That they should in order that they should offer up pleasing sacrificing to the God of the heavens, and that they should pray for the life of the king and his children.

ומני שים טעם. וממני שים צווי ושימת דבר אשר כל אדם אשר ישנה דבר זה יתנסח. יחרב עציו מביתו שיחרב ביתו, יתנסח כמו ונסחתם מעל האדמה (דברים כ״ח:ס״ג):

And an order is issued by me And a command is issued by me, along with the issue of a word regarding any person who disobeys this word.

וזקיף יתמחא עלוהי. ועץ לתלותו יהא גבוה עליו שיתלה על העץ:

shall be torn Aram. יִתְנְסַח. The beams of his house shall be destroyed. יִתְנְסַח is like (Deut. 28:63): “and you shall be uprooted (וְנִסַחְתֶּם) from the land.”

וביתה נולו יתעבד. וביתו יעשה אשפה על כך:

and a gallows upon which to place him And a gallows upon which to hang him shall be [raised up] high, so that he be hanged upon the gallows.

נולו. ענין טינוף ומחראות:

and his house shall be made a dungheap and his house shall be made a dungheap because of this.

ואלהא די שכן שמיה. והאלהים אשר שכן שמו שם:

And God, Who caused His name to rest there [as translated,] and God, Who caused His name to rest there.

ימגר. ימגר ויפגר כל אותו מלך וכל אותו עם אשר ישלח ידו להחריב ולהשחית ביתו זה של ה' אשר בירושלים:

will cast down will cast down and destroy any such king and any such people that will stretch forth a hand to lay waste and destroy His house that is in Jerusalem.

שמת טעם. שמתי ציווי דבר זה אשר יעשה הבנין מהרה עד כאן תשובתו של דריוש:

have issued an edict I have issued a command concerning this matter, that the building be constructed swiftly. Until here is Darius’s reply.

כנמא. כאשר נאמר:

as was said [as translated,] as was said.

אספרנא עבדו. מהרה עשו:

acted swiftly [as translated,] acted swiftly.

ושבי יהודיא. וזקני היהודים היו בונין ומצליחין במלאכתן כנבואת חגי וזכריה ובנו ויסדו את הבנין מן צווי של אלהי ישראל ומרשות כורש מלך פרס הראשון אשר הוחל יסוד הבנין בימיו ומרשות דריוש זה מלך פרס:

And the elders of the Jews And the elders of the Jews were building and succeeding in their work, according to the prophecy of Haggai and Zechariah, and they built and founded the building by the command of the God of Israel and by the authorization of Cyrus, the first king of Persia, in whose days the laying of the foundation was commenced, and by the authorization of this Darius, the king of Persia.

וארתחששתא. הוא דריוש ונקרא ארתחששתא ע"ש המדינה והמלכות כי כל מלכי פרס היו נקראים כך כאשר כל מלכי מצרים נקראים פרעה:

and Artaxerxes He is Darius, but he was called Artaxerxes because of the province and the kingdom, for all kings of Persia were thus named just as all the kings of Egypt were called Pharaoh.

ושיציא. ביתה דנה וסוף תשלום בית זה היה עד יום שלישי לחדש אדר שהיא שנת שש לדריוש המלך ונמצא בנין הבית היה ד' שנים:

And the completion of this House And the end of the completion of this House was until the third day of the month of Adar, which is the sixth year of King Darius; hence the building of the House took four years.

והקריבו לחנוכת. הקריבו לחנוכת בית זה קרבנות הללו והוראת שעה היתה:

And they offered up for the dedication They offered up for the dedication of this House these sacrifices, and it was a temporary ruling.

והקימו כהניא בפלוגתהון. שהיו הכהנים חלוקים בעבודתם ולוי' במשמרות':

Now they set up the priests in their divisions for the priests were divided in their service and the Levites in their watches.

את הפסח. עכשיו עשו ישראל את הפסח בי"ד בניסן זה הבא אחר אדר זה שהושלם הבנין בו:

the Passover [offering] Now Israel made the Passover offering on this fourteenth of Nissan, which followed this Adar, when the building was completed.

ולהם. ולעצמם:

and for themselves Heb. וְלָהֶם, lit. and for them, and for themselves.

וכל הנבדל. הם הגרים שנבדלו מטומאת העבוד' כוכבים לידבק בישראל:

and whoever separated They are the proselytes, who were separated from the defilement of the nations to cleave to Israel.

והסב לב מלך אשור עליהם. והקב"ה הסב לב מלך אשור על ישראל היושבים בממשלתו בארץ אשור להחזיקם ולסייע במלאכת הבנין:

and turned the heart of the king of Assyria toward them And the Holy One, blessed be He, turned the heart of the king of Assyria toward the Israelites who were dwelling under his dominion in the land of Assyria, to strengthen them and to assist in the work of the building.
