Daniel 4:26-34

4:26

לִקְצָת יַרְחִין תְּרֵֽי־עֲשַׂר עַל־הֵיכַל מַלְכוּתָא דִּי בָבֶל מְהַלֵּךְ הֲוָֽה׃

At the end of twelve months, he was walking in the palace of the kingdom of Bavel.

מהלך הוה. הולך היה:

4:27

עָנֵה מַלְכָּא וְאָמַר הֲלָא דָא־הִיא בָּבֶל רַבְּתָא דִּֽי־אֲנָה בֱנַיְתַהּ לְבֵית מַלְכוּ בִּתְקָף חִסְנִי וְלִיקָר הַדְרִֽי׃

The king spoke and said: Is not this great Bavel, that I have built by the might of my power as a royal residence, and for the honor of my majesty?

הלא דא היא. שמע עניים באים על הפתח וצועקים אמר מה קול ההמון הזה באזני אמרו לו עבדיו אלו העניים שקבעת להם עת פרנסתם אמר הלא דא היא בבל רבתא וגומר ואלמלא ביזבזתי אוצרותי לפרנסת עניים מהיכן הייתי בונה כל הפלטרין הללו מעתה איני מפרנסם כך דרש רבי תנחומא:

וליקר הדרי. ולכבוד תפארתי:

4:28

עוֹד מִלְּתָא בְּפֻם מַלְכָּא קָל מִן־שְׁמַיָּא נְפַל לָךְ אָֽמְרִין נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר מַלְכָּא מַלְכוּתָא עֲדָת מִנָּֽךְ׃

While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying: O King Nevuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from thee.

עוד מלתא בפום מלכא,: עדת מנך. סרה מנך:

4:29

וּמִן־אֲנָשָׁא לָךְ טָֽרְדִין וְֽעִם־חֵיוַת בָּרָא מְדֹרָךְ עִשְׂבָּא כְתוֹרִין לָךְ יְטַעֲמוּן וְשִׁבְעָה עִדָּנִין יַחְלְפוּן (עליך) [עֲלָךְ] עַד דִּֽי־תִנְדַּע דִּֽי־שַׁלִּיט (עליא) [עִלָּאָה] בְּמַלְכוּת אֲנָשָׁא וּלְמַן־דִּי יִצְבֵּא יִתְּנִנַּֽהּ׃

And thou shalt be driven from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; thou shalt be made to eat grass like oxen, and seven years shall pass over thee, so that thou mayest know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He will.

4:30

בַּהּ־שַׁעֲתָא מִלְּתָא סָפַת עַל־נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר וּמִן־אֲנָשָׁא טְרִיד וְעִשְׂבָּא כְתוֹרִין יֵאכֻל וּמִטַּל שְׁמַיָּא גִּשְׁמֵהּ יִצְטַבַּע עַד דִּי שַׂעְרֵהּ כְּנִשְׁרִין רְבָה וְטִפְרוֹהִי כְצִפְּרִֽין׃

The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nevuchadnezzar. And he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was steeped in the dew of heaven, until his hair was grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.

ספת. הגזירה כלתה עליו:

גשמה. גופיה:

שערה כנשרין רבה. שערותיו ככנפי נשרים גדלו על כל גופו:

וטפרוהי כצפרין. וצפרניו כצפור:

4:31

וְלִקְצָת יֽוֹמַיָּא אֲנָה נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר עַיְנַי ׀ לִשְׁמַיָּא נִטְלֵת וּמַנְדְּעִי עֲלַי יְתוּב (ולעליא) [וּלְעִלָּאָה] בָּרְכֵת וּלְחַי עָלְמָא שַׁבְּחֵת וְהַדְּרֵת דִּי שׇׁלְטָנֵהּ שׇׁלְטָן עָלַם וּמַלְכוּתֵהּ עִם־דָּר וְדָֽר׃

At the end of the days [i.e., the seven years], I, Nevuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honored Him who lives for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation.

ולקצת יומיא. לקץ הימים שקבעו לו לסוף ז' השנים:

נטלת. נשאתי:

ומנדעי עלי יתיב. ודעתי עלי חזרה:

ולעלאה ברכת. ואת העליון ברכתי:

4:32

וְכׇל־[דָּיְרֵי] (דארי) אַרְעָא כְּלָה חֲשִׁיבִין וּֽכְמִצְבְּיֵהּ עָבֵד בְּחֵיל שְׁמַיָּא (ודארי) [וְדָיְרֵי] אַרְעָא וְלָא אִיתַי דִּֽי־יְמַחֵא בִידֵהּ וְיֵאמַר לֵהּ מָה עֲבַֽדְתְּ׃

And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as naught and He does according to His will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. And none can stay His hand or say to Him: What doest thou?

Rashi

כלה חשיבין. רבותינו אמרו האי חירגא דיומא לא שמיה אבק הנראה בשמש:

וכמצביה עבד בחיל שמיא. וכרצונו עושה בצבא השמים:

ולא איתי די ימחא בידיה. ולא יש שימחה בידו:

4:33

בֵּהּ־זִמְנָא מַנְדְּעִי ׀ יְתוּב עֲלַי וְלִיקַר מַלְכוּתִי הַדְרִי וְזִיוִי יְתוּב עֲלַי וְלִי הַדָּֽבְרַי וְרַבְרְבָנַי יְבַעוֹן וְעַל־מַלְכוּתִי הׇתְקְנַת וּרְבוּ יַתִּירָה הוּסְפַת לִֽי׃

At that time, my reason returned to me, and I returned to the glory of my kingdom. And my majesty and splendor returned to me; and my counselors and lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom. And still more greatness was added to me.

ביה זמנא. באותו זמן:

וליקר מלכותי הדרי. ולכבוד מלכותי חזרתי:

וזיוי. ותואר פני:

ולי הדברי ורברבני יבעון. ואותי יועצי ושרי היו מבקשים וחפצים שאשוב:

התקנת. הוכנתי:

ורבו יתירה הוספת לי. וגדולה יתירה מן הראשונה נתוספת לי, אמרו רבותינו שרכב על ארי וקשר תנין בראשו:

4:34

כְּעַן אֲנָה נְבֻכַדְנֶצַּר מְשַׁבַּח וּמְרוֹמֵם וּמְהַדַּר לְמֶלֶךְ שְׁמַיָּא דִּי כׇל־מַעֲבָדוֹהִי קְשֹׁט וְאֹרְחָתֵהּ דִּין וְדִי מַהְלְכִין בְּגֵוָה יָכִל לְהַשְׁפָּלָֽה׃ {פ}

Now I, Nevuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and His ways justice; and He is able to abase those who walk in pride.

וארחתה דין. ודרכיו משפט:

ודי מהלכין בגוה. ואשר מהלכין בגאוה יכול להשפיל:
