וַיְהִי לְעֵת תְּשׁוּבַת הַשָּׁנָה לְעֵת ׀ צֵאת הַמְּלָכִים וַיִּנְהַג יוֹאָב אֶת־חֵיל הַצָּבָא וַיַּשְׁחֵת ׀ אֶת־אֶרֶץ בְּנֵי־עַמּוֹן וַיָּבֹא וַיָּצַר אֶת־רַבָּה וְדָוִיד יֹשֵׁב בִּירוּשָׁלָ͏ִם וַיַּךְ יוֹאָב אֶת־רַבָּה וַיֶּהֶרְסֶֽהָ׃
And it came to pass, at the time of the return of the year, at the time when the kings go out to battle, that Yo᾽av led forth the power of the army, and ravaged the country of the children of ῾Ammon, and came and besieged Rabba. But David remained at Yerushalayim. And Yo᾽av smote Rabba, and destroyed it.

וַיִּקַּח דָּוִיד אֶת־עֲטֶֽרֶת־מַלְכָּם מֵעַל רֹאשׁוֹ וַֽיִּמְצָאָהּ ׀ מִשְׁקַל כִּכַּר־זָהָב וּבָהּ אֶבֶן יְקָרָה וַתְּהִי עַל־רֹאשׁ דָּוִיד וּשְׁלַל הָעִיר הוֹצִיא הַרְבֵּה מְאֹֽד׃

ובה אבן יקרה. בעטרה:
ותהי על ראש דויד. יש מפרשים על ראש דוד ממש ויש לתמוה היאך ראשו סובלת ורבותינו פירשו אבן שואבת היתה בה ושמעתי בנרבונא כי מנהג בארץ ישמעאל שתולין כתר של מלך מלמעלה על ראשו והוא יושב כנגדה מלמטה תחתיה על כסא ומה שכתוב ותהי על ראש דוד שנראית כמו על ראשו:
וְאֶת־הָעָם אֲשֶׁר־בָּהּ הוֹצִיא וַיָּשַׂר בַּמְּגֵרָה וּבַחֲרִיצֵי הַבַּרְזֶל וּבַמְּגֵרוֹת וְכֵן יַעֲשֶׂה דָוִיד לְכֹל עָרֵי בְנֵי־עַמּוֹן וַיָּשׇׁב דָּוִיד וְכׇל־הָעָם יְרוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃ {ס}
