הָיְתָה עָלַי יַד־יְהֹוָה וַיּוֹצִאֵנִֽי בְרוּחַ יְהֹוָה וַיְנִיחֵנִי בְּתוֹךְ הַבִּקְעָה וְהִיא מְלֵאָה עֲצָמֽוֹת׃
The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,

והיא מלאה עצמות. רבותינו אמרו שהיו משבט אפרים שיצאו ממצרים לפני הקץ והרגום אנשי גת הנולדי' בארץ כמו שאמור בדברי הימים:
וְהֶעֱבִירַנִי עֲלֵיהֶם סָבִיב ׀ סָבִיב וְהִנֵּה רַבּוֹת מְאֹד עַל־פְּנֵי הַבִּקְעָה וְהִנֵּה יְבֵשׁוֹת מְאֹֽד׃

והעבירני עליהם סביב. לבקעה ולא הכניסו לתוכה לפי שהיה כהן:
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלַי בֶּן־אָדָם הֲתִֽחְיֶינָה הָעֲצָמוֹת הָאֵלֶּה וָאֹמַר אֲדֹנָי יֱהֹוִה אַתָּה יָדָֽעְתָּ׃
And he said to me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowst.

התחיינה. הנראה בעיניך שיוכלו לחיות:

ונתתי עליכם גידים וגו'. ובספר איוב הוא אומר עור ובשר תלבישני תחיל' ואחר כך ובעצמות וגידים תסוככני אלא למה היו אלו דומים לאדם שפושט וחוזר ולובש שמה שפשט אחרון לובש ראשון אבל בתחילת בריית הוולד עור ובשר תחילה ואח"כ עצמות וגידים:
וקרמתי. לשון קרום איקרוטיי"רייא בלע"ז:
וְנִבֵּאתִי כַּאֲשֶׁר צֻוֵּיתִי וַֽיְהִי־קוֹל כְּהִנָּֽבְאִי וְהִנֵּה־רַעַשׁ וַתִּקְרְבוּ עֲצָמוֹת עֶצֶם אֶל־עַצְמֽוֹ׃

ויהי קול. והנה רעש העצמות שהיו טופחין זה לזה:
עצם אל עצמו. עצמות כל אחד כל מקום שנתפזרו היו קופצין ומתקרבין כל אחד ואחד אצל מקו' חבורו:
וְרָאִיתִי וְהִנֵּֽה־עֲלֵיהֶם גִּדִים וּבָשָׂר עָלָה וַיִּקְרַם עֲלֵיהֶם עוֹר מִלְמָעְלָה וְרוּחַ אֵין בָּהֶֽם׃

מארבע רוחות. כל מקום שהלכו נשמותיהן לשוט לד' רוחות העולם משם יתקבצו ויבאו:
ופחי. כמו נופח באש פחם (ישעיהו נ״ד:ט״ז):

העצמות האלה כל בית ישראל המה. רמז ודוגמא לכל בית ישראל בצרותם המה שהרי הם אומרי' יבשו עצמותינו בצרות אבדה תקותינו ומה נוחיל לתשועה עוד דבר אחר כולם אלו משל ישראל היו ומפני שהחייתם עכשיו הם אומרים אבדה תקותינו ולא נחיה עוד שנית כשיחיו המתים:
לָכֵן הִנָּבֵא וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵיהֶם כֹּה־אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יֱהֹוִה הִנֵּה אֲנִי פֹתֵחַ אֶת־קִבְרֽוֹתֵיכֶם וְהַעֲלֵיתִי אֶתְכֶם מִקִּבְרוֹתֵיכֶם עַמִּי וְהֵבֵאתִי אֶתְכֶם אֶל־אַדְמַת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

לכן הנבא. שעתיד אני להחיותם שנית:

And thou, son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it. For Yehuda, and for the children of Yisra᾽el his companions: then take another stick and write upon it. For Yosef, the stick of Efrayim, and for all the house of Yisra᾽el his companions:

ואתה בן אדם קח לך עץ אחד וגו'. וכתוב עליו ליהודה ולבני ישראל חבריו. ארבע תיבות הללו כתוב עליו לאמר עץ זה ליהודה ולשבט בנימין שנלוה עליו:
ולקח עץ אחד וכתיב עליו. זה ליוסף עץ אפרי' ושאר תשעה שבטים שהיו אחרי ירבע' שהיו משבט אפרי':
