הֵילִילוּ כִּי קָרוֹב יוֹם יְהֹוָה כְּשֹׁד מִשַּׁדַּי יָבֽוֹא׃

צירים וחבלים. הם לשון יסורי אשה הכורעת לילד שצירי דלתי בטנה מתפרקים להפתח:
יחילון. חיל וחלחלה לשון רתת הם:
איש אל רעהו יתמהו. בני בבל על הצובאים עליהם כי משונים הם:
ופני להבים פניהם. אומר אני שפניהם צהובים ומאויימין מאד או י"ל שהם עם חושבי מחשבות ואת בני בבל (דימה להם על שם התמהון):
הִנֵּה יוֹם־יְהֹוָה בָּא אַכְזָרִי וְעֶבְרָה וַחֲרוֹן אָף לָשׂוּם הָאָרֶץ לְשַׁמָּה וְחַטָּאֶיהָ יַשְׁמִיד מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

הִנְנִי מֵעִיר עֲלֵיהֶם אֶת־מָדָי אֲשֶׁר־כֶּסֶף לֹא יַחְשֹׁבוּ וְזָהָב לֹא יַחְפְּצוּ־בֽוֹ׃

וְהָיְתָה בָבֶל צְבִי מַמְלָכוֹת תִּפְאֶרֶת גְּאוֹן כַּשְׂדִּים כְּמַהְפֵּכַת אֱלֹהִים אֶת־סְדֹם וְאֶת־עֲמֹרָֽה׃

והיתה בבל. שתי פורעניות באו לה בשתי שנים דריוש הרג בלשאצר ומלך שנה ולשנה השנייה נהפכה כמהפכת סדום מן השמים וכן שנינו בסדר עולם (ירמיהו נ״א:מ״ו) ובא בשנה השמועה של דריוש ואחריו בשנה השמועה והיתה בבל צבי ממלכות וגו', שהיתה מצב וראש הממלכות ושהיתה תפארת גאון כשדים עתה והיתה כמהפכת סדום:
לֹא־תֵשֵׁב לָנֶצַח וְלֹא תִשְׁכֹּן עַד־דּוֹר וָדוֹר וְלֹא־יַהֵל שָׁם עֲרָבִי וְרֹעִים לֹא־יַרְבִּצוּ שָֽׁם׃
It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the ῾Aravi pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their flock lie down there.

ולא יהל שם ערבי. כמו לא יאהל לא יפרוש שם אהל אפי' ערבי שדרכם לישב באהלי' ולהסיע מקניהם ממקום למקו' לא תמצא חן בעיניהם לקבוע שם אהליהם כי אף למרעה צאן לא תהיה ראויה ולא תתמה על לא יהל הנבאר כאילו היתה בו אל"ף כי הרבה מקומות יש שהברת קול האות במקום אות וכן (איוב ל״ה:י״א) מלפנו מבהמות ארץ כמו מאלפנו וכן (משלי י״ז:ד׳) שקר מזין על לשון הות כמו שקר מאזין:
וְרָבְצוּ־שָׁם צִיִּים וּמָלְאוּ בָתֵּיהֶם אֹחִים וְשָׁכְנוּ שָׁם בְּנוֹת יַעֲנָה וּשְׂעִירִים יְרַקְּדוּ־שָֽׁם׃

וימיה. ימי טובתה לא ימשכו כי כבר הובטחו ישראל (ירמי' כט) לפי מלאת לבבל שבעים שנה אפקד אתכם ואותה פקידה על ידי כורש מלך פרס שיטול המלוכה מבבל אחר דריוש המדי כי שניהם מדי ופרס נתחברו עליהם והתנו ביניהם אי מינן מלכי מנייכו אפרכי:
כִּי יְרַחֵם יְהֹוָה אֶֽת־יַעֲקֹב וּבָחַר עוֹד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וְהִנִּיחָם עַל־אַדְמָתָם וְנִלְוָה הַגֵּר עֲלֵיהֶם וְנִסְפְּחוּ עַל־בֵּית יַעֲקֹֽב׃
For the Lord will have mercy on Ya῾aqov, and will yet choose Yisra᾽el, and set them in their own land: and the stranger shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Ya῾aqov.

כי ירחם ה' את יעקב. לשמור להם הבטחת גאולתם מיד בבל:
