וַיֹּאמֶר אֲדֹנָי יַעַן כִּי נִגַּשׁ הָעָם הַזֶּה בְּפִיו וּבִשְׂפָתָיו כִּבְּדוּנִי וְלִבּוֹ רִחַק מִמֶּנִּי וַתְּהִי יִרְאָתָם אֹתִי מִצְוַת אֲנָשִׁים מְלֻמָּדָֽה׃
And the Lord said, Since this people draw near, and with their mouth and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear towards me is as a commandment of men learned by rote;

ותהי יראתם אותי. לא בלב שלם כי אם במצות האנשים המלמדים אותם התראו כנכנעים מלפניו כדי לפתותו בפיכם:
לָכֵן הִנְנִי יוֹסִף לְהַפְלִיא אֶת־הָעָם־הַזֶּה הַפְלֵא וָפֶלֶא וְאָֽבְדָה חׇכְמַת חֲכָמָיו וּבִינַת נְבֹנָיו תִּסְתַּתָּֽר׃ {ס}
therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

לכן הנני. הוא אשר יוסיף להפליא פלא ונוסף על פלא כיסוי על כסוי אוטם על אוטם ומהו הפלא ופלא ואבדה חכמת חכמיו, קשה סילוקם של חכמי ישראל כפלים כחורבן בית המקדש וכל קללות שבמשנ' תורה שכולן אינן אלא הפלאה אחת והפלא ה' את מכותך (דברים כ״ח:נ״ט) וכאן שתי הפלאות:
יען כי נגש העם הזה. יונתן תירגם חלף דאיתרברב עמא הדין כלומר נגשו להגביה עצמן עד לשמים הם מראין עצמן כמכבדין אותי בפה ושפה ואת לבם הרחיקו ממני:
