לְדַמֶּשֶׂק בּוֹשָֽׁה חֲמָת וְאַרְפָּד כִּֽי־שְׁמֻעָה רָעָה שָׁמְעוּ נָמֹגוּ בַּיָּם דְּאָגָה הַשְׁקֵט לֹא יוּכָֽל׃
Concerning Dammeseq. Ḥamat is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is anxiety on the sea; it cannot be quiet.

בים דאגה. דאגתה דומה לדאגת הים השקט לא יוכל. כל דאגה לשון יראה הוא:
רָפְתָה דַמֶּשֶׂק הִפְנְתָה לָנוּס וְרֶטֶט ׀ הֶחֱזִיקָה צָרָה וַחֲבָלִים אֲחָזַתָּה כַּיּוֹלֵדָֽה׃

אֵיךְ לֹֽא־עֻזְּבָה עִיר (תהלה) [תְּהִלָּת] קִרְיַת מְשׂוֹשִֽׂי׃

איך לא עזבה. לא נתמלאת עפר סביב חומתה לחזק החומה כמו ויעזבו את ירושלים עד החומה (נחמיה ג׳:ח׳) ויש עוד לפתור למה לא נעזבת מן הרעה הזאת שלא תבא הרעה עליה:
קרית משושי. כך יתאבל מלכה עליה:
לָכֵן יִפְּלוּ בַחוּרֶיהָ בִּרְחֹבֹתֶיהָ וְכׇל־אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה יִדַּמּוּ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא נְאֻם יְהֹוָה צְבָאֽוֹת׃

ידמו. יחריבו ואינו זז מלשון דממה שכל עיר חריבה אין קול נשמע בה:
וְהִצַּתִּי אֵשׁ בְּחוֹמַת דַּמָּשֶׂק וְאָכְלָה אַרְמְנוֹת בֶּן־הֲדָֽד׃ {פ}
