יָדֹעַ תֵּדַע פְּנֵי צֹאנֶךָ שִׁית לִבְּךָ לַעֲדָרִֽים׃
Be diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.

כי לא לעולם חוסן. שאם אתה עשיר בכסף ובזהב שמא לא יתקיים לעולם לכך אל תבזה דברים קטנים שלך:
גָּלָה חָצִיר וְנִרְאָה־דֶשֶׁא וְנֶאֶסְפוּ עִשְּׂבוֹת הָרִֽים׃

גלה חציר. כשגלה החציר בימי ניסן ויראה הדשא ונאספו עשבים לצמוח אז ייטיב לך שיהיו גזותיהם של כבשים ללבושך:
כְּבָשִׂים לִלְבוּשֶׁךָ וּמְחִיר שָׂדֶה עַתּוּדִֽים׃

ומחיר שדה. ישוו לך העתודים כי תאכל הבשר ותמכור העורות:
וְדֵי ׀ חֲלֵב עִזִּים לְֽלַחְמְךָ לְלֶחֶם בֵּיתֶךָ וְחַיִּים לְנַעֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃

ודי. פרנסתך:
ללחמך וללחם ביתך. תסתפק בחלב העזים הרי מליצתו, והמשל כן הוא, פני צאנך הרב המתמנה על הצבור ישאם בחיקו וינהלם לאט, כי לא לעולם חסן, ובזאת יאכל פירות והקרן קיימת:
גלה חציר. כשיתפשטו שמועותיו ותגדל התורה על ידו אז יהיו הכבשים האלה לבושו יהיו התלמידים לו לשם ולבוש הוד והדר:
נָסוּ וְאֵין־רֹדֵף רָשָׁע וְצַדִּיקִים כִּכְפִיר יִבְטָֽח׃

נסו ואין רודף רשע. נסו הרשעים כשיבא אידם ויפלו בדבר קל מאין רודף:
וצדיקים. אמיץ לבם בהקב"ה ככפיר אשר יבטח בגבורתו:
בְּפֶשַֽׁע אֶרֶץ רַבִּים שָׂרֶיהָ וּבְאָדָם מֵבִין יֹדֵעַ כֵּן יַאֲרִֽיךְ׃

בפשע ארץ רבים שריה. שזהו פורענות לארץ בהיות שריה רבים הרודפי' רק אחר בצעם:
ובאדם מבין. ובשביל אדם מבין יתארך הפורענות מלבוא:
גֶּֽבֶר־רָשׁ וְעֹשֵׁק דַּלִּים מָטָר סֹחֵף וְאֵין לָֽחֶם׃

גבר רש. דיין עם הארץ:
עושק דלים. בדין על שאינו מתון בדין הרי הוא כמטר הסוחף את השדה ואין עושה פירות:
סוחף. שוטף ובמשנה נסתחפה שדהו וכן נסחף אביריך (ירמיהו מ״ו:ט״ו) נשטפו ומעדו וכשלו:
עֹזְבֵי תוֹרָה יְהַלְלוּ רָשָׁע וְשֹׁמְרֵי תוֹרָה יִתְגָּרוּ בָֽם׃ {פ}
