11:1

וַיֵּשְׁבוּ שָׂרֵֽי־הָעָם בִּירוּשָׁלָ͏ִם וּשְׁאָר הָעָם הִפִּילוּ גוֹרָלוֹת לְהָבִיא ׀ אֶחָד מִן־הָעֲשָׂרָה לָשֶׁבֶת בִּֽירוּשָׁלַ͏ִם עִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ וְתֵשַׁע הַיָּדוֹת בֶּעָרִֽים׃

And the chiefs of the cities dwelt in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one-tenth to dwell in Jerusalem, the holy city, [(to defend it)], and nine-tenths in the (other) cities.

Rashi

אחד מן העשרה. שבישראל למען ישבו בירושלים לשמור העיר:

one of ten of Israel, so that they should dwell in Jerusalem to guard the city.

ותשע הידות. תשעה חלקים שבישראל:

and nine parts nine parts of Israel.

11:2

וַֽיְבָרְכוּ הָעָם לְכֹל הָֽאֲנָשִׁים הַמִּֽתְנַדְּבִים לָשֶׁבֶת בִּירוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃ {פ}

And the people blessed all those who volunteered to dwell in Jerusalem.

Rashi

המתנדבים. אשר נדבה רוחם אותם להיות יושבים בירושלים לשמור העיר מן האויבים:

who volunteered whose spirit inspired them to volunteer to dwell in Jerusalem to guard the city from enemies.

11:3

וְאֵלֶּה רָאשֵׁי הַמְּדִינָה אֲשֶׁר יָשְׁבוּ בִּירוּשָׁלָ͏ִם וּבְעָרֵי יְהוּדָה יָֽשְׁבוּ אִישׁ בַּאֲחֻזָּתוֹ בְּעָרֵיהֶם יִשְׂרָאֵל הַכֹּהֲנִים וְהַלְוִיִּם וְהַנְּתִינִים וּבְנֵי עַבְדֵי שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃

And these [viz. 43] are the heads of the land who dwelt in Jerusalem. And in the cities of Judah there dwelt, each man in his holding in their cities — Israel, the priests, the Levites, the Nethinim, and the sons of the servants of Solomon.

Rashi

ואלה ראשי המדינה אשר ישבו בירושלים. הוא שנאמר בסמוך ובירושלים ישבו בני יהודה וגו':

And these are the heads of the province who dwelt in Jerusalem these are the ones regarding whom it is stated below: “And in Jerusalem there dwelt of the children of Judah, etc.”

11:4

וּבִֽירוּשָׁלַ͏ִם יָֽשְׁבוּ מִבְּנֵי יְהוּדָה וּמִבְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן מִבְּנֵי יְהוּדָה עֲתָיָה בֶן־עֻזִּיָּה בֶּן־זְכַרְיָה בֶן־אֲמַרְיָה בֶּן־שְׁפַטְיָה בֶן־מַהֲלַלְאֵל מִבְּנֵי־פָֽרֶץ׃

And in Jerusalem there dwelt of the sons of Judah and of the sons of Benjamin. Of the sons of Judah [(the most eminent)]: Athayah the son of Uzziyah the son of Zecharyah the son of Amaryah the son of Shefatyah the son of Mahalalel, of the sons of Peretz.

Rashi

מבני יהודה עתיה וגו'. חוזר ומפרש מבני יהודה מי ומי היו וכל הפרשה אינה מונה כי אם הגדולים והחשובים שבהם:

of the children of Judah: Athaiah, etc. He returns to explain who those ‘of the children of Judah’ were, and the entire chapter enumerates only the great and esteemed ones among them.

11:5

וּמַעֲשֵׂיָה בֶן־בָּרוּךְ בֶּן־כׇּל־חֹזֶה בֶּן־חֲזָיָה בֶן־עֲדָיָה בֶן־יוֹיָרִיב בֶּן־זְכַרְיָה בֶּן־הַשִּׁלֹנִֽי׃

And Ma'aseyah the son of Baruch the son of Kol-chozeh, the son of Chazayah the son of Adayah the son of Yoyariv the son of Zecharyah the son of Hashiloni.

11:6

כׇּל־בְּנֵי־פֶרֶץ הַיֹּשְׁבִים בִּירוּשָׁלָ͏ִם אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת שִׁשִּׁים וּשְׁמֹנָה אַנְשֵׁי־חָֽיִל׃ {פ}

All the sons of Peretz who dwelt in Jerusalem, four hundred and sixty-eight men of war.

11:7

וְאֵלֶּה בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן סַלֻּא בֶּן־מְשֻׁלָּם בֶּן־יוֹעֵד בֶּן־פְּדָיָה בֶן־קוֹלָיָה בֶן־מַעֲשֵׂיָה בֶּן־אִֽיתִיאֵל בֶּן־יְשַֽׁעְיָֽה׃

And these are the sons of Benjamin: Salu the son of Meshulam the son of Yoed the son of Pedayah the son of Kolayah the son of Ma'aseyah the son of Ithiel the son of Yeshayah.

11:8

וְאַחֲרָיו גַּבַּי סַלָּי תְּשַׁע מֵאוֹת עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁמֹנָֽה׃

And, after him, Gabbai-sallai, nine-hundred and twenty-eight.

11:9

וְיוֹאֵל בֶּן־זִכְרִי פָּקִיד עֲלֵיהֶם וִיהוּדָה בֶן־הַסְּנוּאָה עַל־הָעִיר מִשְׁנֶֽה׃ {פ}

And Yoel the son of Zichri appointed over them, and Yehudah the son of Hasnuah, second over the city.

Rashi

פקיד. ממונה:

the official the one appointed.

משנה. אחר (הפקיד):

the second in command after [the official].

11:10

מִן־הַֽכֹּהֲנִים יְדַֽעְיָה בֶן־יוֹיָרִיב יָכִֽין׃

Of the priests, Yedayah the son of Yoyariv, Yachin.

11:11

שְׂרָיָה בֶן־חִלְקִיָּה בֶּן־מְשֻׁלָּם בֶּן־צָדוֹק בֶּן־מְרָיוֹת בֶּן־אֲחִיטוּב נְגִד בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

Serayah the son of Chilkiyah the son of Meshulam the son of Tzaddok the son of Merayoth the son of Achituv, appointed over the house of G-d.

Rashi

נגיד. ממונה:

the official [as translated,] the official.

נגיד בית האלהים. ממונה על בית אלהים:

the official over the Temple of God appointed over the Temple of God.

11:12

וַאֲחֵיהֶם עֹשֵׂה הַמְּלָאכָה לַבַּיִת שְׁמֹנֶה מֵאוֹת עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁנָיִם וַעֲדָיָה בֶּן־יְרֹחָם בֶּן־פְּלַלְיָה בֶּן־אַמְצִי בֶן־זְכַרְיָה בֶּן־פַּשְׁחוּר בֶּן־מַלְכִּיָּֽה׃

And their brethren, who performed the Temple services, eight hundred and twenty-two, and Adayah the son of Yerocham the son of Pelalyah the son of Amtzi the son of Zecharyah the son of Pashchur the son of Milkyah.

Rashi

ואחיהם עושה המלאכה לבית. וחבריהם שהיו עובדים עבודת הבית וקרבנותיו:

And their brethren who performed the work of the Temple and their colleagues, who were performing the service of the Temple and its sacrifices.

11:13

וְאֶחָיו רָאשִׁים לְאָבוֹת מָאתַיִם אַרְבָּעִים וּשְׁנָיִם וַעֲמַשְׁסַי בֶּן־עֲזַרְאֵל בֶּן־אַחְזַי בֶּן־מְשִׁלֵּמוֹת בֶּן־אִמֵּֽר׃

And his brethren, heads of the fathers' [houses of the priests], two hundred and forty-two, and Amashsai the son of Azriel the son of Achzai the son of Meshilemoth the son of Immer.

Rashi

ראשים לאבות. ראשי בית אב ממשפחות הכהנים:

rulers over the fathers’ houses the heads of the fathers’ houses of the priestly families.

11:14

וַאֲחֵיהֶם גִּבֹּרֵי חַיִל מֵאָה עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁמֹנָה וּפָקִיד עֲלֵיהֶם זַבְדִּיאֵל בֶּן־הַגְּדוֹלִֽים׃ {ס}

And their brethren, men of war, one hundred and twenty-eight, and appointed over them, Zavdiel, son of the great ones.

Rashi

ופקיד עליהם. ממונה עליהם:

and the official over them the one appointed over them.

11:15

וּמִֽן־הַלְוִיִּם שְׁמַעְיָה בֶן־חַשּׁוּב בֶּן־עַזְרִיקָם בֶּן־חֲשַׁבְיָה בֶּן־בּוּנִּֽי׃

And of the Levites, Shemayah the son of Chashuv the son of Azrikam the son of Chashavyah the son of Buni.

11:16

וְשַׁבְּתַי וְיוֹזָבָד עַל־הַמְּלָאכָה הַחִֽיצֹנָה לְבֵית הָאֱלֹהִים מֵרָאשֵׁי הַלְוִיִּֽם׃

And Shabthai and Yozavad over the external work of the house of G-d [i.e., Temple maintenance, etc.], of the heads of the Levites.

Rashi

על המלאכה החיצונה. אשר לבית כגון בנייני בדק הבית ועצי המערכה שהיו מביאים מבחוץ:

over the outside work of the Temple, such as the buildings of the repair of the Temple (sic) and the wood of the arrangement, which they would bring from outside.

11:17

וּמַתַּנְיָה בֶן־מִיכָא בֶּן־זַבְדִּי בֶן־אָסָף רֹאשׁ הַתְּחִלָּה יְהוֹדֶה לַתְּפִלָּה וּבַקְבֻּקְיָה מִשְׁנֶה מֵאֶחָיו וְעַבְדָּא בֶּן־שַׁמּוּעַ בֶּן־גָּלָל בֶּן־[יְדוּתֽוּן] (ידיתון)׃

And Matanyah the son of Michah the son of Zavdi the son of Asaf, the head, for the initiation of praise and prayer [(in the songs of the Levites)] and Bakbukyah, his second, of his brethren, and Avda the son of Shamua the son of Galal the son of Yeduthun.

ראש התחלה יהודה לתפלה. הוא היה ראש וממונ' וגדול לפתוח תחלה להודות בתפלה ובזמירות שירותיהם של לוים, יהודה כמו יודה והה"א נכנסת בתיבה שלא לצורך כמו יוסף יהוסף:

the head to begin the thanksgiving in prayer He was the head and the appointed official, and the greatest one who was first to start and to thank in prayer and in singing the songs of the Levites. יְהוֹדֶה is like יוֹדֶה, and the “hey” enters the word unnecessarily, like יוֹסֵף and יְהוֹסֵף.

11:18

כׇּל־הַלְוִיִּם בְּעִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ מָאתַיִם שְׁמֹנִים וְאַרְבָּעָֽה׃ {פ}

All the Levites in the holy city, two hundred and forty-eight.

11:19

וְהַשּֽׁוֹעֲרִים עַקּוּב טַלְמוֹן וַאֲחֵיהֶם הַשֹּׁמְרִים בַּשְּׁעָרִים מֵאָה שִׁבְעִים וּשְׁנָֽיִם׃

And [appointed over] the keepers of the [Temple] gates, Akkuv, Talmon, and their brethren; the watchers at the gates were one hundred and seventy-two.

Rashi

והשוערים. ממונין על שערי המקדש:

And the gatekeepers those appointed over the gates of the Temple.

11:20

וּשְׁאָר יִשְׂרָאֵל הַכֹּהֲנִים הַלְוִיִּם בְּכׇל־עָרֵי יְהוּדָה אִישׁ בְּנַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃

And the rest of Israel, the priests, the Levites, in all the cities of Judah, each [dwelt] in his inheritance.

Rashi

איש בנחלתו. כל אחד בנחלתו היו יושבים:

each one in his inheritance They were dwelling each one in his inheritance.

11:21

וְהַנְּתִינִים יֹשְׁבִים בָּעֹפֶל וְצִיחָא וְגִשְׁפָּא עַל־הַנְּתִינִֽים׃ {פ}

And the Nethinim dwelt in the Ofel [in Jerusalem]. And Tzicha and Gishpa were [appointed] over the Nethinim.

Rashi

בעופל. מקום אחד אשר בירושלים:

in the Ophel a place that was in Jerusalem.

על הנתינים. ממונים על הנתינים:

over the Nethinites appointed over the Nethinites.

11:22

וּפְקִיד הַלְוִיִּם בִּירוּשָׁלַ͏ִם עֻזִּי בֶן־בָּנִי בֶּן־חֲשַׁבְיָה בֶּן־מַתַּנְיָה בֶּן־מִיכָא מִבְּנֵי אָסָף הַמְשֹׁרְרִים לְנֶגֶד מְלֶאכֶת בֵּית־הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

And appointed over the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Buni the son of Matanyah the son of Michah, of the sons of Asaf, the singers, over the [external] work of the house of G-d [viz. 16].

Rashi

ופקיד הלוים. ממונה על הלוים אשר בירושלים:

And the official over the Levites appointed over the Levites in Jerusalem.

לנגד מלאכת. על מלאכת הבית ממונה כגון בנייני בדק הבית ושאר דברים שמוציאין ממון למעשה (למעשר) הבית כענין שנאמר למעלה ושבתי ויוזבד על המלאכה החיצונה וגו':

over the work of the Temple of God He was appointed over the work of the Temple, such as the buildings of the repair of the Temple and the rest of the matters for which money is spent for the work of the Temple, like the matter that is stated above (verse 16): “...and Shabbethai and Jazabad over the outside work, etc.”

11:23

כִּֽי־מִצְוַת הַמֶּלֶךְ עֲלֵיהֶם וַאֲמָנָה עַל־הַמְשֹׁרְרִים דְּבַר־יוֹם בְּיוֹמֽוֹ׃

For the charge of the king was upon them, and the singers were entrusted [(to take money from King Darius's treasury)], each day's need in its day [(for Temple exigencies)].

Rashi

כי מצות המלך עליהם. והמלך היה מאמין בהם:

For the command of the king was upon them and [his] trust The king trusted them.

על המשוררים. להוציא ממון מאוצר המלך דריוש:

upon the singers to spend money from King Darius’s treasury.

דבר יום ביומו. כדי לעשות צרכי הבית:

for the daily requirements in order to perform the requirements of the Temple.

11:24

וּפְתַֽחְיָה בֶן־מְשֵֽׁיזַבְאֵל מִבְּנֵי־זֶרַח בֶּן־יְהוּדָה לְיַד הַמֶּלֶךְ לְכׇל־דָּבָר לָעָֽם׃

And Petachyah the son of Meshezavel of the sons of Zerach the son of Judah was a courtier to the king for all the needs of the people.

Rashi

ליד המלך. הוא היה מצרן לעצת המלך דריוש:

at the king’s hand He was privy to King Darius’s counsel.

לכל דבר. לכל דבריהם אשר לעם לדבר עליהם אל המלך:

for every matter for every matter that concerned the people, to speak to the king on their behalf.
